GW 40k - Boarding Actions

We are excited to a great new way to play 40k, it is called Boarding Actions and is a lower point 40k game set on the space hulk of the Gallowdark. For those of you that already play Kill Team, this is the next step towards playing bigger games. We will be getting the new rule books next week and will be adding it to our regular Warhammer nights later this month. Here is a little bit more info...

"The Great Rift has torn the Emperor's realm in two. Ancient alien empires rise from the ashes of prehistory to claw at the dying stars. Predatory nightmares boil from the outer darkness, while everywhere the veil of reality wears thin and the flames of war rise ever higher. Day by day, battle upon battle, the galaxy careens ever closer to total annihiliation.

From amidst the growing anarchy and prophecies of a final ending rise those who would deny the last darkness and, in so doing, seize victory for themselves. Greatest amongst these is Abaddon the Despoiler. Forging an infernal pact with a dread new ally, he unleashes the mighty Arks of Omen and their rapacious Balefleets upon the Imperium Sanctus and the Imperium Nihilus alike.

Striking at world after world, the Arks ignite fresh conflagrations of war wherever their shadows fall. Humans, aliens, and even Abaddon's heretical rivals fight back against these nightmare war fleets wherever they can - but there is a darker and more insidious purpose to the attacks of the Arks of Omen, and time is not their ally..."

In this 88-page hardback book, you'll find:

- The ongoing narrative of Warhammer 40,000, including the coming of a new power sworn to the Dark Gods. Astonishing art and a thrilling story set the stage for the Arks of Omen series

- A stunning showcase of miniatures, including depictions of vicious boarding actions

- Full rules for playing your own Boarding Action games, including setting up the battlefield, modified rules for visibility, cover, and loads more

Battlefields - MTG Tournament

With just two FNM events left of 2022, it was agreed that the combined scores would be the best way to find or Battlefields champion of 2022.

The first week was Pioneer and the second would be Standard, which would mean that our champion would need to be good at this years two favourite formats.

After the first week the standing were...

Battlefields - Commander

Our regular Thursday Commander nights have been one of the most popular events and regularly attracts a good crowd with a mix of decks.

So as the year drew to a close it was a great opportunity for some competitive play. Some plays also went the extra mile and built some lovely Christmas themed decks.

We had eight players and these were randomly split into two groups of four. On the first table we had Jon, Archie, Gary and Luca and the second one we had Jake, Lucas, Ridley and Piers.

Archie claimed a very early victory on the first table and won the game with an infinite combo piece that the other three were simply unable to stop. Another game was played and this time Jon won and this meant that both Archie and Jon would progress to the final.

On the other game which lasted a bit longer the Christmas inspired deck of Piers was the the eventual winner. The stronger Slithers deck was targeted by everyone during the early game and was unable to get started and with everyone spend a lot of effort to dealing with it left the door open for the life gaining Christmas deck to slowly kill the remaining two players. With Ridley being the last of the two to fall he also progress to the final table with Piers.

So with two hours of play already passed we had our top table, which was Archie, Jon, Ridley and Piers.

Archie was the favourite as his combo was pretty consistent and very hard to stop. He made this mistake of revealing that he had both pieces he needed and the rest of the table knew that once he reach just five mana the game would be over and Archie would be our Battlefields winner for 2022. Unfortunately he missed his 5th land drop and this allowed players to chip away at his life total. He never drew the 5th land and became the first to fall and leave the battlefield. The other battled away for some time but finally Jon claimed the victory he needed and became our champion.

All players received several promo cards and promo packs, so there were no real losers.

Battlefields - Kill Team Tournament Day 2

After some epic and occasionally bloody battles on day one,  day two started fairly quiet...

The Eldar who had dominated the first exchanges travelled to Octarius with a precise plan of how to tackle the Plague Marines. The battle started with the Eldar electing to use their speed to make a dash for the fuel pipe in an attempt to secure an early objective from the slower Chaos force. This attempt was met with a hail of bolter fire claiming the brave Dire Avengers as the first casualties of the mission. Changing tactics the Eldar laid down some precise shots from the Ranger sniper rifles and started to eliminate the stronger enemy warriors with several mortal wounds. After a very tense and close battle neither side could quite do enough and both forces retired from the field to regroup for the final challenge.

Elsewhere the Necrons boarded the Gallowdark and fought with the Hunter Cadre racing to control the power conduits and siphon the power. The superior hand to hand combat abilities of the Ruststalkers proved to much and the battle was over almost before it had started.

On Moroch the Tactical Marines took the high vantage point over the advancing Veteran Guardsman. Despite taking cover behind the high walls of the outpost they could not survive the bolter disciplines of the marines.

As the dust settled on the opening battles for Eldar were looking in a commanding position and returned confidently to Calnath. This time one of the rangers took up the role of Exemplar and the Exarch planned to repeat the tactics that had gone so well in their last victory. Unfortunately for them the Necrons had other plans and quickly stamped their authority on the battle and it wasn't long before just on lone ranger remained. The hordes of living metal soon overcame him and the Necrons secured the most one sided victory of recent times.

The Veteran Guard remained on Moroch to await the arrival of the Hunter Cadre. They bedded themselves in for battle hoping to gun down the Ruststalkers before they could cut through their line like the effective killing machines they had proved to be in the other battles. Despite a valiant effort the Skitari soon overwhelmed the guardsman and claimed a much needed victory.

Now all eyes turned to the Gallowdark as the Plague Marines went into the dark expanse of the space hulk to encounter the more experienced Tactical Marines. The corridors soon erupted into an explosion of bolter fire as both armies tried to secure the objectives. The marines stood guard at the doorways hoping to strike down the advancing Chaos forces. The plague marines however were proving that they were disgustingly resilient and just kept coming, slowly but surely securing the power lines. The marines still had speed on there side and their discipline with their bolters was beginning to make an impact. This battle was going to decide the outcome of the whole event.

If the Marines could hold steady then the Necrons would win the war, and the Chaos forces knew that victory might be slipping from their grasp. News arrived from Calnath of the epic defeat of the Eldar and suddenly the Plague Marines had a new sense purpose, but would it be enough?

I hope that everyone enjoyed the tournament and would like to thank everyone for playing so well and making both evenings an absolute joy. I personally played some great games and enjoyed the missions that were both challenging and brutal. After nearly 10 hours of concentration spread over two nights the result was...

Joint 5th were Riley (Tactical Marine) and Joseph (Veteran Guard) on 3 points, 4th was Charlie (Hunter Cadre) on 6 points, 3rd Gary (Eldar) on 7 points, second was Jake (Necrons) also on 7 points and the overall winner was Phil (Plague Marines) on 8 points.

Congratulations go to Phil who's army was also voted the best painted. We look forward to the league which will return in 2023 and our next tournament.

Battlefields - Kill Team Day 1

In our opening battles the Eldar were victorious in the dark corridors for the Gallowdark, managing to siphon the power then needed and secure the conduits.

The Necrons narrowly won of the Veteran Guardsman on Octarius with both teams unable to secure any fuel, relying on securing the battlefield instead.

On Calnath the Plague Marines dominated in a bloody battle which saw the Hunter Cadre loser their exmplar and ultimately be almost wiped out.

The Plague Marines moved to Moroch and took on the Necrons in battle that tested both sides to the full as they tried to secure the remote outpost. Despite the best efforts of both teams neither were able to achieve their objectives and withdrew, settling for a draw.

Back on Octarius the Salamadar Space Marines managed to out manoeuvre the Hunter Cadre and secure just enough fuel to take what was an important victory.

Which the ruins on the battlefields of Calnath still smoking from battle the Eldar beat the Veteran Guardsman by the narrowest of margins to gain their second victory. The guard used all the tactics they had including some precise airstrikes. They had fought well and despite the bravery of the Eldar exemplar which lead to his death on the field, just couldn't secure the battlefield.

The final standings after day one were...
