Pokemon Rotation

2020 Season Pokémon TCG Format Rotation

At the beginning of every Championship Series season, Pokémon Organized Play removes older expansions from competition in the Standard format, with the goal of maintaining a healthy competitive environment. This rotation challenges existing players to create new strategies and enables new players to get involved in Play! Pokémon events using the most recent releases.

The 2020 season starts July 1, 2019, so players can get an early start on working toward the 2020 Pokémon World Championships. However, the rotation will not occur until August 15, 2019. Importantly, this means that the 2019 Pokémon World Championships, which take place August 16–18, will be the first major event to use the 2020 format and rules as currently listed. For other competitions taking place this summer, be sure to check the event's rules and regulations before attending.

The Standard format for the 2020 season will consist of the following expansions:

  • Sun & Moon Ultra Prism and any expansions released afterward
  • Black Star Promo cards numbered SM94 and up
  • Cards from the following products are also legal:
  • Dragon Majesty
  • Pokémon TCG: Detective Pikachu
  • Starting with the 2020 season, cards from McDonald's Collections will be legal in the Standard format if they're functionally identical to a card that is currently legal in the Standard format. For example, Magnemite (McDonald's Collection 2018, 8/12) is functionally the same card as Magnemite from Sun & Moon—Ultra Prism, so it can still be used in the Standard format.

New expansions become legal for tournament play on the third Friday of the month they are released.

Paupers Ladder

Paul Stapleton of Bedsit Games which is based in Brighton has written a new game which is due for release in September this year.

PAUPERS' LADDER: A game of exploration adventure and class struggle for 2-4 players.
There’s a tournament on and those high and mighty heroes aren’t allowed to enter. It’s up to you grave diggers, vermin catchers and scavengers to show them how it’s done.
With your bird companion in tow, craft recipes, complete quests, learn virtues and fight all manner of creatures. Win the right to rule Brighthelm and ensure your fellow paupers are never forgotten.

It looks like it will be another success for him and hopefully we will be stocking it. In preperation for the release here is a video showing a play through...

Coming this September ...

Long ago, a vengeful god stole the stars from the night sky. To illuminate the night, hopeful people sent glowing paper lanterns floating toward the heavens. Out of nowhere, clever magical phoenixes appeared, soaring through the sky. As they flew from lantern to lantern, their enchanted touch changed the lanterns into new stars! The phoenix who can create a constellation of seven new stars will be the champion of a world looking for light!

Tsuro: Phoenix Rising is a new entry in the classic Tsuro series. The game shares a bond with the foundations of the venerable original: play tiles, move pawns, and stay in play, but it introduces a revolutionary board that allows for the double-sided tiles to flip and rotate throughout the game, creating diverging paths and opening up new strategies.

Featuring gorgeous phoenix miniatures, beautiful lantern tokens, and unique gameplay elements such as life tokens that allow your phoenix to be reborn from the ashes once per game, Tsuro: Phoenix Rising is a new chapter in the legacy of Tsuro!

Pokemon League Promo Cards

We have just received a new Pokemon League promo card, which is ...

These will be issued one per player at each of our Pokemon Leagues starting this Tuesday which is the 13th August. These will only be issued while stocks last and we hope that there will be enough to last the rest of August, but to avoid dissappointment please come a long to a league soon.

League is a very casual event that happens every Tuesday and Thursday between 4pm and 6pm where you can play Pokemon, trade cards, talk about everything Pokemon related and if you are new to the game learn how to play. You don't even need to bring a deck as you can use one of our prebuilt ones.

You do not need a copy of the game as we will be using our demo copy. However if you wish to purchase one of the many different types that we have available you will of course be able to do so.

To book a place please come in and speak to us or pop us an email to info@kdgames.co.uk.

Youtube Channels

Over the years that we have been running Pokemon League we have had so many young players start youtube channels, many only post a couple of times, other post lots. Some have been removed as the players get older and other still exist.

I thought it would be nice to start sharing them on our website and through our blog, so here are a couple of the newer ones ...

If you have other channels that you would like us to share please let me know and I will try and add them to our blog. Finally here is a video from one of our original players and now commentator for many Pokemon tournaments ...

The new shop

I have been asked to do a quick video for one of our major suppliers to show what the new shop looks like. So having sent it off today I thought I might share it with you in case some of you have not been able to pop in for a look around...

Pokemon Pre-release

The new set of Pokemon Cards goes on sale next weekend and that means that this weekend it is Pre-release weekend.

We will be running two events, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, both will start at 11am. It will cost £20 to play and spaces are limited to just 8 per event.

What is a Pre-release?

Of course if your quite new to Pokemon, you may not know what a pre-release is, so here is a very quick run down of what you get and what happens.

First thing that happens is that you get given a pre-release box...

Once you open that box you will find a small pack of 24 non random pokemon cards, which includes useful trainer cards and one of four different promo cards. This pack will likely be the main part of the deck that you will eventually construct. You will also find four boosters from the new set which is currently unavailable in the UK until next week!

Once you have got over the excitement of all the great new cards you will sort them out and choose enough to make a 40 card deck.

You may be thinking, hold on, what about energy cards, well the good new is, that we have plenty of energy for you to add to your cards to make the deck function. (which you also get to keep)

When everyone is ready it will be time to play. There will be three games to play against different people and at the end we will have a winner for the day.

Regardless of how well you did in your games, everyone will get a booster from the new set as a prize, and obviously you will get to keep everything you have opened. The winner will get an additional booster as a special prize!

After that it will be time to go home, but not before you have had a chance to trade with your firends at the event.

Our first FNM at the new shop

Tonight at 7pm, we will be running our very first FNM event at our new store on the High Street in Shoreham.

What better way to get things started then by running a STANDARD event. Entry is usual cost just £3 and for that you are guaranteed a booster at the end. The top four will get a special promo booster as well, with the winner also getting a second normal booster.

Rounds are set to last 50 minutes and will be best of three and there will be a minimum of 3 rounds and a maximum of 4 depending on ho many players we get. Our capacity is 18 players so please confirm attendance on our Facebook event page to guarantee your place.

Sunday 14 July 2019

Where are we going?

There is now less than a week before we open the doors at our new shop on Shoreham High Street, so I thought I would post a picture showing just how close it is to our previous location...

The cheapest parking (other than street parking) is probably still in Tarmount Lane car park and the shop is less than a five minute walk from there.

Friday 12 July 2019

The Heroic Evolution

This weekend there will be a Card Fight Vanguard Sneak Peak for anyone that is interested. Venue will be the shop and it will be on Sunday at 1pm. Please let us know if you are planning to attend as if there is not enough interest the event will be cancelled.

Time for a change

At the weekend I post to say that KD Games is now into its 13th year of trading. During that time we have traded in 5 different shop locations in Hove and Shoreham. I also post a picture of some keys which obviously means we are now about to add a sixth to the list. On Saturday 20th July we will be moving from Tarmount Lane and heading back to the High Street...

It is on the south side next to the barbers opposite the Co-op. It looks a little shabby at the moment but hopefully we will have it looking better very soon.

I will be moving stock slowly over the coming days so please bear with us if during the transition.

Our clubs and events should still be happening as planned and next week and will be the last ones in number 8. We have really enjoyed our time in Tarmount Lane and have many happy memories, to be honest if there was not for the fact that it is likely to be pulled down in the not to distant future we would probably be staying. The new venue is smaller, but I am hopefully we will still have the same number of seats and tables. More details on the new shop will be posted in the coming days

Please come and join us next week and help us say goodbye to an old friend.

Sunday 7 July 2019

Happy Birthday

Today KD Games (formally known as Kids Dreams) is 12 years old.

During that time we have served thousands of customers, run hundreds of events and sold more boosters than I can count.

We started in Boundary Road in Hove as a toy shop in 2007 and gradually evolved in to the games store we are today.

I would like to thank all of our customers for your continuing support and giving us such great memories. We look forward to many more years to come.

Friday 5 July 2019

Warcradle Scenic

From mid July we will be able to special order lines from the Warcradle Scenics range. There is a wide variety of MDF scenery available that is easy to build and paint and improves the look of your battlefields. Details to follow later in the month.

Water at KD Games

We have for a while now been providing free drinking water for our players and will continue to do so, but from this week we will no longer be providing disposable plastic cups.

We will happily refill any container that you choose to bring with you. We recommend a drinking bottle with a sports cap or similar as this prevents any accidents whilst playing.

We hope that players understand that we need to make this change as we can no longer justify the amount of single use plastic that we are throwing away.

The Army Painter

For the first time since we moved from our Kids Dreams high street location back in 2013, we will start stocking accessories and paint from The Army Painter.

We will initially be starting with some basic tools such as paint brushes, a few basic colours and the ever popular super glues and plastic glues as well as everyone favourite green stuff!

Unlike when we previously stocked the range we will be able to order much smaller quantities with a very quick delivery time. This will mean that if customers want something from the range we can check availability instantly and get it within a couple of days.

More details to follow once our first lines come in later this month.

Tuesday 2 July 2019

Gideon's Spellbook

For this particular set, Gideon Jura features in all depictions. Most cards are white; one is an artifact. The special card frames uses a white version of the Beleren font, and the color of the mana symbolsis inverted. For the rendering of Blackblade Reforged, Wizards of the Coast called on Richard Kane Ferguson, the artist who originally created the sword's iconic look. It also sports an exclusively designed legendary version of the card frame. The text boxfeatures white lines, and the depiction of a round mask is used for the holofoil stamp. The expansion symbol is a cracked shield in front of an open book.

Signature Spellbook: Gideon contains the following eight cards:
1 Gideon Jura Legendary Planeswalker — Gideon Rise of the Eldrazi
2 Martyr's Bond Enchantment Commander New art
3 Path to Exile Instant Conflux New art
4 Rest in Peace Enchantment Return to Ravnica New art
5 Shielded by Faith Enchantment — Aura Commander 2015 New art
6 True Conviction Enchantment Scars of Mirrodin New art
7 Worship Enchantment Urza's Saga New art
8 Blackblade Reforged Legendary Artifact — Equipment Dominaria New art

Additionally, each box set contains a foil card which may be any of these eight cards.[5] The planeswalker has a mythic rare expansion symbol, the other cards have rare expansion symbols.

Join the Gatewatch or pledge your loyalty to Nicol Bolas in Ravnica: Inquisition, a social deduction game set on the Magic: The Gathering plane of Ravnica. Each player takes on the role of a representative of a Ravnican Guild that is either loyal to the Gatewatch or an Agent of Bolas. The Gatewatch loyalists are tasked with discovering who the Agents of Bolas are, while the Agents of Bolas simply need to survive in order to further the schemes of Nicol Bolas.

Players will elect leaders for each of the 5 colors, but only players whose guild’s color pair contains the color may be voted for. Each color leader has a special power they can use to further their goals, so players must be careful when voting, lest Nicol Bolas’ influence grow. Once all the color leaders have been elected, a vote is held to eliminate 1 player. Once the dust has settled, players will reveal their roles, and if the Agents of Bolas were eliminated, the Gatewatch wins!

A social deduction game for 5-10 players, Ravnica: Inquisition is great for both fans of party games and fans of Magic: The Gathering!

Components:
  • Rulebook
  • 10 Role Cards
  • 10 Guild Cards
  • 5 Color Leader Cards
  • 5 Targeting Cards
  • Ablaze Marker
  • Ultimate Price Marker
  • Notepad
  • Pencil

In Relic, two to four players each assume the role of a powerful individual from the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and bravely venture forth to shield the Antian Sector from certain doom. By completing missions and claiming victory over enemies, characters gain rewards and experience, including mighty artefacts called Relics, furthering their chance at defeating whatever evil lies beyond the Warp rift.

Based on the classic Talisman system, each turn, a player rolls a single six-sided die before moving their playing piece that number of spaces around the board. That player then draws a card or cards to see what they’ve encountered, pitting their heroic persona against foul enemies, dangerous locations, and fantastic strangers. And all the while, these intrepid heroes rise in power, as they work their way toward the ultimate goal at the center of the board, which could be anything from confronting Kairos Fateweaver, the two-headed Oracle of Tzeentch, to fighting for control over the Lost Flagship of St. Antias.

The new WizKids edition features improved and expanded highly-detailed busts of the ten available player characters, as well as upgraded punchboard player and scenario cards.

Will you save humanity or fall to the powers of Chaos?

Rainbow Draft

In the coming weeks we will be running a Dice Masters Rainbow Draft. So just in case you are new to the format here are the rules we will be using ...

Dice Masters Rainbow Draft Format: 10/12 Pack Draft (per player) –
6 Player Pods recommended

How it works:

Each player should come to the event with 8 Sidekick Dice, 12 Basic Action Dice, 4 Indicator Cards, and 2 Basic Action Cards (players may choose which Basic Action Cards they’d like to use after completing the draft, but must use the same 2 throughout the event).

Each player in the draft sits down with 10/12 packs of Dice Masters to draft with. A set of 6 packs is opened. As each player opens their packs they should verify that the cards and dice match. Keeping their cards secret, players should set them aside into a pile of 10/12 cards. The next 5/6 packs are opened and when complete are placed into a separate pile of 10/12 cards in front of the player (the piles are not to be mixed).

All dice are placed into the center, and arranged as below so players can see exactly which dice and how many of each will be available during the draft. We call it Rainbow Draft as players may elect to sort them by color to allow for easier visual spotting of which cards correspond to which dice during the draft. An example of 4 player draft (Recommended is 6). Reminder: all dice from all packs are placed in the middle before drafting begins.

Notice that each player has oriented the two piles they’ll be drafting from differently in order to not mix them up. Each player then takes the deck they most recently prepared and after a short amount of time to review the cards, they select one, setting it face down in front of them, and passing the remaining cards to the player to their right. This card begins a pile of cards that players will be able to use in their team. After all players have selected a card, they take the pile from their left to select their next card and repeat the process until they are passed a single card to be placed into their pile. After the first stack of 10/12 cards have been depleted, players should take a moment to review the cards they drafted (each player should have 10/12 cards at this point). After reviewing their cards, players will return them to a face-down pile in front of them and draft the second pack the same way as they did the first, this time passing in the opposite direction (left).

After drafting all packs, players should take dice from those that were set aside to match each of their cards. They will then construct a tournament team based on the Basic Action Cards they own and the cards they drafted.

This tournament team can have up to 8 cards and up to 20 dice across those cards (many teams will have less than this). The basic action dice and cards and sidekick dice do not count against this limit of 8 cards and 20 dice.

Guidance: If for some reason a card and die within a draft pack do not match, the card is considered to be correct. If a suitable die is available to swap in, that may be done up to the tournament organizer’s discretion. Alternatively, a pack containing an error may be replaced by a new unopened pack if it’s identified before the draft begins.

In the event that the draft has occurred and a player has a card that they drafted that does not have a matching die, the store should allow a die to be added to the player’s dice after verifying it has not made its way into another player’s pile.

Cardfight Vanguard Promo Cards

Today I have just received delivery of the new Cardfight Vanguard promo cards...

These will be issued from next week until we run out, along with the new fight packs.

MTG Challenger Decks

Last year, Wizards of the Coast introduced Challenger Decks: a quartet of pre-constructed Standard decks built for new and returning players. If you were just getting into Magic and needed a deck to bring to Friday Night Magic, Challenger Decks were a competitive and affordable option. Each deck came with a full 60-card deck and 15-card sideboard, and with a few minor upgrades, you could have a top-tier Standard deck to compete with your friends.
Challenger decks are back this year and in stock from today, but hurry before they are gone as last year we sold out within a few days.
