Battlefields - Commander

Our regular Thursday Commander nights have been one of the most popular events and regularly attracts a good crowd with a mix of decks.

So as the year drew to a close it was a great opportunity for some competitive play. Some plays also went the extra mile and built some lovely Christmas themed decks.

We had eight players and these were randomly split into two groups of four. On the first table we had Jon, Archie, Gary and Luca and the second one we had Jake, Lucas, Ridley and Piers.

Archie claimed a very early victory on the first table and won the game with an infinite combo piece that the other three were simply unable to stop. Another game was played and this time Jon won and this meant that both Archie and Jon would progress to the final.

On the other game which lasted a bit longer the Christmas inspired deck of Piers was the the eventual winner. The stronger Slithers deck was targeted by everyone during the early game and was unable to get started and with everyone spend a lot of effort to dealing with it left the door open for the life gaining Christmas deck to slowly kill the remaining two players. With Ridley being the last of the two to fall he also progress to the final table with Piers.

So with two hours of play already passed we had our top table, which was Archie, Jon, Ridley and Piers.

Archie was the favourite as his combo was pretty consistent and very hard to stop. He made this mistake of revealing that he had both pieces he needed and the rest of the table knew that once he reach just five mana the game would be over and Archie would be our Battlefields winner for 2022. Unfortunately he missed his 5th land drop and this allowed players to chip away at his life total. He never drew the 5th land and became the first to fall and leave the battlefield. The other battled away for some time but finally Jon claimed the victory he needed and became our champion.

All players received several promo cards and promo packs, so there were no real losers.
