What is Pauper Commander

Over the last couple of weeks at MTG Commander Night there has been some interest in playing Pauper Commander (PDH)

PDH, like Commander, is a multiplayer format typically played in pods of 3-4 players (though 1v1 is also fairly popular). It has been around since the early 2000s with varying rule sets. The most universally accepted rules are that each player starts with 30 life and plays a deck of 99 unique common cards (excluding basic lands) headed by an uncommon creature that is the deck's commander. Another difference is that a player dies after taking 16 damage from a single commander. Otherwise, the rules follow those of normal commander.

PDH follows the combined paper/online rarities adopted by Pauper but also allows the use of promo cards. This means cards that have only appeared at the common or uncommon rarity in online sets such as Chainer's Edict and Bastion Protector are legal to play. You can use the Scryfall search engine to find a card's rarity from any set.

It is a really easy format to get started in and really allows you to make the most of those unused common cards that you have laying around.

If you want to get involved and fancy a bit of a challenge, then for just £5 you can purchase 99 commons from our boxes in the store, then all you have to do is find or purchase an uncommon commander and your ready to play.

Warhammer Underworlds

There is a brand new box set for Warhammer Underworlds coming out next week so I thought it would be a good time to have a look at how to play this great game.

So what is Underworlds?

Warhammer Underworlds is a fast-paced game of skirmish battles in the inky depths of a mysterious labyrinth, using finely detailed miniatures, smart cardplay, dice-rolling, and clever placement of terrain, objectives, and obstacles.

Designed for two players, a game of underworlds usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. Build an unstoppable deck from the many available universal and faction-specific cards and take on all comers!

Here is a good starting point, which is a video on the Warhammer Youtube channel...

How difficult is it to start playing, is there a starting point?

Rivals is an all-new way to play Warhammer Underworlds, designed for beginners who want to get stuck right into the action without having to spend hours poring over cards and building a deck. Each warband comes with its own set of unique cards that make up a competetive deck right out of the box – so you can get cracking right away.

What is Championship Format?

The Championship format is the most competitive version of Warhammer Underworlds, in which grand masters build innovative decks of cards to lay waste to their opponents. Find great combos from your collection of gambits, upgrades, spells, and objectives, and unleash them to claim victory. Championship format is designed for high-level play, including tournaments.

Kill Team : Tac Ops

With more players starting Kill Team, it seemed like a good time to look at Tac Ops Cards.

Tac Ops are the sneaky secondary objectives that can add a lot of twists to your Kill Team games.

Although your games of Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team will be focused around specific mission objectives, there are always opportunities to eke out extra success from every deployment. Enter the Tac Ops secondary objectives, which you choose before the game begins, worth a solid stack of victory points that might just be the difference between victory and defeat.
So what exactly are Tac Ops? What we have here are a set of secondary objectives that add some secrecy, and tactical twists to any game of Kill Team. First of all, every Kill Team is broken down into an “Archtypes”, (or more than one). Each Archtype reflects a specific way of war and you get examples such as:Security, Seek and Destroy, Recon, etc…

Each of these archtypes corresponds to a set of 6 Tac Ops cards. Each player chhoses and archtype that makes their Kill Team and takes these two at a time, and in three steps, looks at two, and discards one. When you are done, you will have 3 cards in your hand. Here are some examples to give you an idea of what we’re talking about for the security archtype:

Each Tac Op is kept secret until it is revealed, and it will specify when it should be revealed. Each has two conditions, marked with bullet points, that you can attempt to complete. You can score VPs from each condition once, and you cannot score VPs from a condition before that Tac Op is revealed. If a Tac Op instructs you to secretly select something, make a note of it on your roster so that your selection is recorded.

They are a great addition to Kill Team and make for a more tactical game.

Kill Team: Shadowvaults

The new Kill Team Expansion is almost here. Shadowvaults continues the exploration of the Gallowdark. The Kasrkin came up against the Necrons in this new box set.

The Kasrkin are the elite of the elite – the finest troops from the Cadian Astra Militarum forces. Their legacy of excellence continues far beyond Cadia and even extends into the labyrinth that makes up the innards of the Gallowdark.
he new Kasrkin sprues have enough weapon options to defend an entire planet from Abaddon’s attacks. Too soon? There are two plasma guns, two meltaguns, two grenade launchers, two flamers, two hot-shot volley guns,* and all the parts needed to make a vox-trooper, recon-trooper, demo-trooper, sharpshooter, and combat medic.

Led by their Cryptek masters, the Hierotek Circle searches the Gallowdark for long-forgotten technology that can be used to return the Necrons to their rightful place of power following their long sleep.

The new Necron kill team is based on the existing Immortals/Deathmarks kit, and it comes with a new upgrade sprue which lets you build an Apprentek, a Plasmacyte Reanimator, and a Plasmacyte Accelerator. There are also parts to upgrade an Immortal into a Despotek and alternate heads for the Deathmarks.

Kill Team: Shadowvaults comes with a whopping 45 pieces of terrain! This includes brand new items such as security panels, weapons lockers, the robot crawler machine (crucial for getting bombs into place in certain missions),*** and a heavy bolter sentry turret.

The terrain in Kill Team: Shadowvaults is a great way to expand your collection from Kill Team: Into the Dark, and it comes just in time for the new Warhammer 40,000 boarding action rules.

MTG Banned Annoucement

Here is the annoucement made yesterdday by Wizards of the Coast regarding new banned cards in Standard and Modern formats...

"Announcement Date: October 10, 2022

Standard:

The Meathook Massacre is banned.

Modern:

Yorion, Sky Nomad is banned.

MTG Arena Effective Date: October 13, 2022

Magic Online Effective Date: October 10, 2022

Tabletop Effective Date: October 10, 2022

View the list of all banned and restricted cards by format.
STANDARD

As is often the case, the Standard card pool rotation with the release of Dominaria United caused quite a shakeup, with cards from the new set finding their places into decks, and many of last year's cards shifting context within the new metagame. As the format has settled into place, the color black has proven powerful and prolific, and makes up the foundation of many of the top decks. Despite that commonly shared color, we're seeing good diversity among competitive decks and strategies, and player engagement with the format has been healthy.

To provide a small push against the color black's play rate among competitive decks, we're choosing to ban one black card. We discussed several different options, as no single black card stood out as a major power outlier played by all decks containing black. Ultimately, we decided that banning The Meathook Massacre was the best choice, as it's one of the most powerful black cards in the format, is especially powerful against specific archetypes (decks relying on a lot of small creatures), and has had its time to shine in Standard for over a year.

With The Brothers' War on the horizon, we anticipate the new cards entering the format to provide tools for other decks and color combinations. In the meantime, we expect this little shakeup will help keep Standard enjoyable and trending toward an even healthier spot going forward as the card pool expands.
MODERN

Modern has been in a healthy place since the last banned and restricted update, with good diversity among archetypes and even the most popular competitive decks occupying a relatively small slice of the metagame (about 5–6% each, on Magic Online). However, as tabletop Modern play continues to rebound since the height of the pandemic, we've decided to enact a change that we've been considering for some time by banning Yorion, Sky Nomad.

Yorion most commonly appears as a companion in Four-Color Omnath decks, which show a strong win rate and, according to our matchup data, are likely to continue to rise in popularity. In addition to game-balance concerns with the deck, we're also factoring in the physical dexterity requirements of playing with a large deck for tabletop. We're wary of the metagame reaching a point where players are playing the deck because of its perceived strength and win rate despite not enjoying how cumbersome it can be to operate.

While these physical dexterity issues exist to a lesser degree in other formats (like Pioneer), Modern specifically entails more shuffling and other physical card manipulation because of the deep card pool of card-selection spells, fetch lands, and so on. Cards encouraging large decks, like Battle of Wits, have existed in the past, but usually on the fringes of competitive play rather than as one of the strongest decks.

Finally, we've also heard from many players that the repeated triggers caused by Yorion and many of the cards surrounding it can lead to repetitive gameplay patterns and long games with lots of downtime between the other player's actions. It's important that the net player experience playing with the top decks is a fun one, and while we're okay with such decks existing, it can make the format less enjoyable when these patterns are associated with one of the strongest decks over a long period of time.

Therefore, to make Modern as fun and accessible as it can be for all types of players, Yorion, Sky Nomad is banned in Modern."

Transformers Roll Out to The Brothers' War Battlefield

Colossal-sized constructs. Sparks. An epic clash of larger-than-life robots. The fate of the multiverse is at hand, and for one set, Optimus Prime is rolling to the rescue —and Megatron's army of Decepticons are hot on his heels.

For the first time, Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond brings a crossover to a premier Magic set: Transformers is joining The Brothers' War!

A total of 29 Universes Beyond Transformers cards will join The Brothers' War lineup, split between two of the franchise's factions: the righteous Autobots and the power-hungry Decepticons. Each Transformers card is double-sided, allowing them to "convert," helping Transformers fans feel right at home when they play with these cards.

Universes Beyond Transformers cards can be found in The Brothers' War Set and Collector Boosters.

The arrival of the Transformers cards brings a bonus for comic book fans: 14 of the characters are also featured using their designs from the comic series by IDW Publishing, Transformers: Shattered Glass, also featured in the Hasbro toy product line. These comics present a malformed reality, where Autobots are evil and Decepticons are heroic.

Each of the 14 Transformers: Shattered Glass robots appear in The Brothers' War Collector Boosters in traditional foil and nonfoil with alternate art and a special Shattered Glass treatment.

Gift Bundle

The Bundle: Gift Edition is a great product to get players connected with the Universes Beyond Transformers cards. Each Gift Bundle includes eight Set Boosters and one Collector Booster, plus one foil Mythic Rare Universes Beyond Transformers card. The Gift Bundle's oversized Spindown is blue with red paint, and features the Transformers set symbol.

Whether your a Transformers fan since its early days with the 1980s cartoon, are long-time toy collectors, or picked up the franchise later with the comics by IDW Publishing, this is a must have product.
