Want to learn to play Magic the Gathering?

Welcome Decks return to KD Games this week. This are available for new players through in-store events as one way to help them learn the game.

There are five different Welcome Decks—one for each color of Magic—with 30 cards each. Each Welcome Deck includes two 30-card decks in each box; one in an indicated color, and the other a random one of the five mana colors in Magic.

Similar to Jumpstart packs, a player can take two of the 30-card decks, shuffle them together, and instantly have a 60-card deck to play with! With mix-and-match gameplay that's repeatable and mechanically simple, these are a great way to teach your friends and family about Magic.

Welcome Decks are not Standard-legal. Instead containing a wide array of cards from across Magic's history meant to showcase everything the game has to offer, including some Booster Fun versions of cards.

If you want to learn to play this great game then simply pop in and ask for a time or book online. It only takes 30 minutes to pick up the basics and opens the door to a life long hobby and friendly community of players.

You can book for this and many other TCG's on our website...

Universus Cowboy Bebop/Trigun

In stock now at KD Games

Both of these decks offer unique playstyles with ever-popular anime characters. Who doesn’t love the age-old question, “Who would win in a fight? Godzilla or Vash the Stampede?” Or how about “Spike Spiegel vs. Nott the Brave—who is victorious?” Well, our brand-new Challenger Series format gives you the best chance to answer those very questions.

Vash the Stampede comes side by side with Nicholas D. Wolfwood in this explosive Challenger Series deck. This deck offers a unique gameplay experience, as you try to manipulate the top card of your discard pile throughout the game. One of the best cards to find is Seen It All, as this foundation can give you free stats on every attack if you get the correct card on top of your discard pile throughout the turn. Fear not—if the top card isn’t what you want, there are several ways to help change it at a moment's notice. Pitching In literally moves a card to the top of the discard pile for our deck, while attacks like Fan the Hammer and Merciful Volley help mill multiple cards from the top of our deck. When we mill more than one card off the top, we get to choose the order in which they go into the discard pile, ensuring the perfect card is on top each time. Using these tools is not only the heart of the deck, but it also brings uniqueness to each time you pick up the deck. Games become exciting when you mill four cards with Fan the Hammer and get your opponent with the classic "gotcha," milling four attacks for +8 damage.

Ultimately, the choice between Vash and Wolfwood comes down to whether you want to be aggressive or not. In typical pacifist fashion, Vash trades attacks in hand for more cards overall, and his mill ability provides an extra burst of speed on all the attacks we keep. Wolfwood, on the other hand, is far more aggressive in nature, and it reflects in his character. Utilizing momentum for card draw and milling for damage leads to a faster game, should you choose to play that way.

If Trigun Stampede isn’t quite your speed and you want to take your play to the stars, then Cowboy Bebop might be for you instead. Spike Spiegel and Faye Valentine headline this Challenger Series, and their game is all about flipping foundations.

This deck wants to get its board flipped for a high variety of abilities that both characters utilize. Whether we're pumping speed with Fallen Angel's Revenge or reaching ten flipped foundations to make our attacks unblockable with Welcome to Space Land, we are making sure our board is turning face down. This deck doesn't just push offense, though—cards like Fast Friendship help give us a benefit for having so many face-down foundations in our staging area. The end outcome of this deck may often be the same, with a board full of face-down foundations, but getting there is the fun and exciting part of the gameplay. You, as the player, get to choose how and when to use these powerful abilities, and sometimes, you even get to double up on them. Falling Heel Strike does a great job of letting us flip a foundation like Leaving the Bebop for its ability, then unflip it with Heel Strike. Because of the way our game works, this interaction lets us use Leaving the Bebop again if we have enough momentum. Sometimes, this alone can generate enough card advantage to take the game.

If you're trying to decide which character to choose to pilot this deck, it has similarities to our previous deck. Spike Spiegel is a more traditional six-hand-size aggressive character. He wants to have a large board all flipped face down so he can pump huge stats. Cards like Light It Up go a long way in providing consistent damage across multiple attacks. Faye Valentine, on the other hand, provides consistent damage for each flip, while also reducing damage if she decides that's the better move. Our larger seven-hand-size means we have more options, but also that we need to be mindful of our lower life total.

Life in Reterra

Not long from now, the world as we know it is an overgrown memory — and though the world has changed, we've changed with it, using anything we can find to build a new way of living.

Life in Reterra is a (re)building game, and it's up to each player to build a community of their own. To set up, choose one of three ready-to-play themed building sets, or put together a set of your own. Each set consists of five building cards, with associated building tiles for each card.

Each player starts with one square land tile in play. Each land tile is divided into a 2x2 grid, with one of five types of terrain in each grid space; a space might also hold a gear icon or one of four types of relics. Players also have three land tiles in hand, and five land tiles are displayed face up.

On a turn, choose a land tile from your hand or the display, then add it to your community, which can be at most four tiles on each side. When the tile has a gear, you can either place an inhabitant from the reserve on this gear or place a building tile in your community...but each part of the building must be supported by a gear and all of these gears must be on the same type of terrain.

After you have a building in play, you gain the power of the building card and can use it once on each of your subsequent turns. Maybe you can place relic tokens for additional points, place additional inhabitants, junk an opponent's relics, or score for building large sections of a terrain or having more of a building than anyone else.

Once everyone has sixteen tiles in their community, players score for what they've built, earning points for blocks of terrain of at least seven spaces, surrounded energy sources (which are a special type of tile), inhabitants, relics, and buildings.

White Dwarf 504 – A Cornucopia of Kroot Content

The Vespid Stingwings may be fluttering around and catching everyone’s attention at the moment, but Kroot Mercenaries have taken up residence in White Dwarf to show they’re still the business. Issue 504 is available to pre-order on Saturday, featuring our favourite carnivorous commandos on the cover.

The Kroot love smaller scale engagements, where they can make greater use of their hunting skills. Rules for Na’Pok’s Hunters let you bring your meat-munching mercenaries to games of Combat Patrol.

On top of that, there are rules for fielding whole armies of Kroot in Crusade games, where they bind themselves to a pact in order to further their own agenda – no matter the cost. When times are lean, Kroot tribes may clash over hunting grounds, and rules for Predators and Prey missions let you work out territorial disputes while scoring some big game trophies – and lots of delicious flesh – in the process.

Over in the Mortal Realms, Flashpoint Moulderhunt continues into its second instalment with a two-player campaign that pits the Astral Templars stormhost against the abhorrent menageries of the Clans Moulder, with special rules that amp up the narrative feel.

Warcry warbands are heading to the Ravaged Coast in Aqshy in pursuit of treasures left by larger forces battling across the land where the Gnaw and the Great Parch meet. New quests, traits, exploration tables, and artefacts provide everything you need for a nautical adventure.

This issue brings a conclusion to the Warhammer Age of Sigmar portion of The Tale of Four Warlords with a massive four-player extravaganza on one epic table. The Bunker features new monthly missions on top of a brand new way to play Kill Team via rapidly changing objectives, and a Spearhead tactics 101. Finally, preparations for the battle of the Ollanz cluster continues apace as the six participants show off their mighty 3,000-point armies ready to fight in the Beta-Garmon campaign.

You can pick up your copy of White Dwarf from KD Games.
