HOW TO PLAY UNIVERSUS

LET'S LEARN THE BASICS!

CHARACTER CARDS

In UniVersus you play as your Character Card — it represents everything about your deck, including your maximum health and even your hand size!

Character Cards have powerful Enhance abilities that define your deck's strategy!

ATTACKS

Attack Cards attack a Zone — High, Medium or Low, just like a fighting game!

Defending players can play blocks from their hand and match the zone of their block to nullify the attack completely, but watch out -- the higher the Attack's Speed Stat, the harder it is to block!

Attacks that land reduce your Rival's health by the attack's damage! Knock your opponent down to 0 to win the game!

FOUNDATIONS

Foundations help you play more cards per turn, and give you special abilities you can use during a fight!

Foundation Cards are built into your stage by playing them from your card pool, just like attacks!

Once they're on your stage, Foundations can Commit themselves to help you pass checks to play cards!

For full details on how to play, check out the video below from UVS Games

Ditto Draft

Ditto Draft is the ideal way to draft the Pokémon TCG with two to four players. Open booster packs, pick the cards you’d like to build a deck with, and then battle against your friends, with a little help from Ditto!

The Setup

Ditto Draft is a Limited format event for two to four players. Four is the ideal number, but the event can be run with two or three. Ditto Draft events may be run with Pokémon TCG products in two different ways:
  • 1 Each player receives four predetermined Pokémon TCG booster packs. They can all be from the same expansion or from different expansions, as long as each player has the same four packs.
  • 2 Each player receives a Build & Battle Box. Each player opens their 40-card ready-to-play deck without revealing its contents to the other players. Then, they set aside any Pokémon in the deck, as these cards will not be used for deck construction. Only the Trainer cards and Energy cards in the deck may be used. Players can look through these cards, which can be used to build their deck along with the cards drafted later.

Regardless of the product used, players will also be provided with Ditto Markers to use along with the special Ditto Draft rules (see below). Ditto Markers can be placed on Basic Pokémon without a Rule Box to grant them the Ability to evolve into any Stage 1 or Stage 2 Pokémon that a player drafts and includes in their deck.

Players will be seated in a circle to facilitate the draft. Once everyone is ready, the Organizer will signal the players to open their first booster pack. If using a combination of packs from different expansions, all players should open a pack from the same expansion at the same time. Each player selects one card from the pack and sets it aside to start their draft selection pile, along with the Pokémon TCG Live or Pokémon TCG Online code card and the basic Energy card or VSTAR marker. Players then pass the remaining cards from the booster pack, face down, to the person on their left. The cards selected by each player should remain secret during the drafting process.

Each player continues to select one card from among the cards passed to them until all the cards have been selected. After all cards from a booster pack have been picked, players will have one minute to review the cards they have so far. This process repeats for each remaining booster pack, with the passing pattern alternating from left to right as each new pack is opened.

Deck Building

After all the booster packs have been opened and all the cards have been selected, each player constructs a 40-card deck using the cards they picked from the booster packs and if applicable the Build & Battle Box, as well as basic Energy cards provided by the Organizer. Players have 20 minutes to construct their decks. Players may not trade the cards they selected in the draft with other players until the tournament ends. After everyone's deck is completed, play begins.

Gameplay

Games will be played with 4 Prize cards instead of the usual six. Once the first round of the tournament begins, players may not alter the contents of their decks. All standard gameplay rules apply, with the following additional Ditto Draft rule:

Once during your turn (before you attack), you may place a Ditto marker on 1 of your Basic Pokémon that doesn’t have a Rule Box. It gains the following ability:

"Ability: EVOLUTIONARY ADVANTAGE Once during your turn, you may put any Stage 1 or Stage 2 card from your hand onto this Pokémon to evolve it."

You can’t use this Ability during your first turn or the turn this Pokémon was put into play. If you put a Stage 2 card onto this Pokémon, your turn ends. Each Pokémon can use only 1 Evolutionary Advantage Ability per game.

White Dwarf 501 – Reality Warping Boarding Actions Missions, Board Building Advice, and More

The June issue of White Dwarf is almost with us, which means we’re about to do our monthly flick through the pages to pick out all the best bits. Before that though, here’s a video on what you can expect from White Dwarf as a new reader.

Issue 501 starts with a trip into the Bunker to catch up on what’s been going on. There are two new Scenarios of the Month to try out, plus rules taking the fight to sandblasted deserts in Kill Team.

There are plenty more rules to dig into, with reality rift rules for use in a Boarding Action that let you shoot around corners in six exciting missions that are more mind-bending puzzles than out-and-out firefights.

For those of you braving the Gnarlwood, there are new rules for fighting in the deepest depths, where the trees are hungrier than ever, and lore, quests, and traits for the Pyregheists and Ydrilan Riverblades.

If lore is what you’re into, there’s the final part of the chronologically compromised Tempus Purgatus story, an update on how the forces of Chaos are getting on over in the Nephilim Anomaly, and for fans of the Mortal Realms, there’s a short story featuring two brothers attempting to escape the vile Skaven.

Speaking of those nasty ratmen, Phil from the Warhammer Studio takes us on a reflective journey through the Era of the Beast, and a new instalment of Arks Arcana sets up the new stage of play in Warhammer Age of Sigmar, and explores the aftermath of the Vermindoom.

In last month’s milestone issue, the massive Invasion of Samarkis Battle Report was spread across three simultaneous battlefields. It was a huge undertaking, and in this issue, the pair behind the breathtaking Makhis Cove board reveal how they made this show-stopping battlefield – which you can now play on at Warhammer World!

There is a generous helping of gorgeous miniatures, including an Ironjawz showcase, alongside hobby and tactics tutorials, and the first chapter of a new Horus Heresy campaign – the Raid on Ollanz-Mu.

Plus if you get your copy from us here at KD Games you will only pay £6

Yu-Gi-Oh - Post-Pre Release

This weekend we will be running the delayed Yu-Gi-Oh Prerelease event for the Rarity Collection 2. It will be held in the shop at 7pm on Saturday 8th June and should last around 3 hours. The event will cost £30 and will be a five pack draft event.

A Draft Format is where players sit at tables in a group of 4-8 players, depending on the number participating, with an equal number of unopened booster packs each. (in this case 5). When instructed by the Tournament Organizer, each player picks up 1 of their booster packs and opens it, then takes 1 of the cards and sets it face down in front of them to start a pile. After that, they pass the remaining cards to the left or right, dictated by the Tournament Organizer, pick up the cards passed to them by the player on their other side and select another card. This continues until all of the cards from each player's pack have been selected. Then each player opens the next pack and repeats, passing the cards in the opposite direction. Once all packs have been used up, players construct Decks on their own using only the cards they've selected.

When doing a Booster Draft, the following rules apply:
  • Players may not trade cards pulled in the Booster Draft until the tournament is over.
  • Decks must have a minimum of 20 cards. Maximum Deck size is only limited by the number of cards a player drafted.
  • Decks may contain more than 3 cards of the same name.
  • The Forbidden and Limited Lists used by the Advanced Format and Traditional Format are ignored.
  • Extra Decks can contain any number of Extra Deck monsters.
  • Any cards not used in a player's Main Deck or Extra Deck are placed in their Side Deck, which has no maximum.

It's going to be a wild and fun time!

How exactly does this work out? Let me walk you through it.

BUILDING ON THE HORIZON

When you sit down on Prerelease day, you're going to get handed a Modern Horizons 3 Prerelease Pack.

While there are many things in here, like a spindown life counter for tracking your life total and a fun little insert with some information and tips, the most important are these six Play Boosters:

Open them all and check out your new stack of cards. There will also be a foil-stamped rare or mythic rare card inside that you can play—make sure to pull that one out.

Okay, boosters open? Well, you're ready to build a deck!

But where do you even start?

Well, first thing's first, you should know what you're trying to do! In Sealed Deck, you only need 40 cards, not 60 or 100. You can get as many additional basic lands as you want from the store.

A good rule of thumb is to play 17 lands. So, all things said and done, you're only looking to play about 23 nonland cards from the cards you open. That's your goal: identify the 23 cards to play.

Okay, sounds a bit easier. How do you go about picking those cards?

Try sorting your cards by color first. Make eight piles: one for each color, one for any multicolor cards, one for colorless cards, and one for lands. As you're going through, you'll have a chance to read the cards and see what interests you.

You'll want to whittle your choices down to two colors. You can sometimes "splash" a third, playing two colors as your base and a couple powerful cards or additional costs of another color, but I'd really focus on the two colors you want here. You can select them in any ways you want—maybe you just like those colors—but three things to keep an eye out for are:
  • Any strong rares in those colors that you're excited to play
  • A lot of removal cards (Cards which destroy or otherwise deal with your opponent's creatures.)
  • Evasion (Many games of Sealed Deck are won with flying creatures or hard-to-block cards.)
Additionally, another huge element to look out for are good synergies and multicolor cards. Every two-color pairing in Modern Horizons 3 has a theme, and knowing what those are can clue you in to which colors to play. These are detailed in an insert on the top of every Play Booster display, but here it is for easy reference as well:

Once you've chosen your colors, it's important to think about your mana curve. This helps to ensure that you have creatures to cast at every turn of the game. If everything costs six mana, you're going to be way behind on playing creatures, and if everything costs two mana, you're going to get outclassed in the late game.

Here's how to check your mana curve. First, lay out your creatures in mana-value order from left to right. So, all creatures that cost one mana, then all creatures that cost two, and so on. Only lay out noncreatures here if they're cards you are planning to play as soon as you have that much mana—for example, you might play an Equipment on turn two, so that counts as a two-drop, but you're probably not playing a removal spell on turn two.

For Limited in general—and this is just a guideline—I'd look to play something like this:1 mana: 0–2
  • 2 mana: 4–6
  • 3 mana: 3–5
  • 4 mana: 2–4
  • 5 mana 1–3
  • 6+ mana: 0–2

Once you have those figured out, go ahead and add in your noncreature spells. You will probably want to play all your removal spells to deal with your opponents' creatures. Beyond that, it's nice to have ways to pump up your creatures at instant speed and ways to draw cards. But you can season to taste depending on what you think might work well in your deck.

And there you have it! When you're finished, you should have a 40-card deck. You can play more than 40 cards, but I would strongly advise against it: every card you play beyond 40 just worsens the odds of drawing your best cards.

Tomorrow we will look at some of the mechanics from this exciting set.
