Magic at CONQUEST

In September it is CONQUEST and this year there is more Magic than ever before.

Firstly if you book online before the event your entry price will be just £5. That will get you in for a full day of gaming fun. Doors open at 10am and close at 10pm (that's 12 full hours) there will be various traders selling both singles and sealed product. With space to play casual games as well as some Commander which is being organised by our friends at Geek Central.

REMEMBER the first 50 people to pay for CONQUEST tickets will get a free Goodie Bag!

If however you want something more competitive we will be running a STANDARD event in the evening. This event is due to start at 6pm and will cost an additional £5. There will be booster prizes for the top player (amount depends on attendance) and a special CONQUEST playmat for the champion. All that and a chance to claim the title from last years champion Michael Pike.

Of course you may have realized that CONQUEST is happening on prerelease weekend and we will be hosting a our very own event from 12pm. This will cost an additional £20 and gives players the chance to open and play with cards from 'Battle for Zendikar' a week before release!

This event currently has a maximum of 30 players and if you are one of the first 16 to buy a ticket for this event you will receive a 'buy a box' promo card.

Still want more magic? Then why not come to the FNM event on the Friday before CONQUEST? We have the main hall from 4pm and will be starting at 7pm as normal. In fact it is our normal FNM just somewhere else. The event will be MODERN and as normal will have booster prizes for the winners and of course the FNM promo card for September.

What is different however is that if you have bought a ticket for CONQUEST the FNM event will be completely free! You can of course still come along just for the Friday and this will be the usual price of £3.

So if you want a truly great weekend of MTG you can come to FNM, attend CONQUEST, play in the Prerelease and try and become our touranament champion for just £30.

Don't forget its Gambit Sunday on the 27th which will give you a chance to play in another Prerelease (details on this later on the KD Games blog) - so your weekend doesn't have to end there!

Tickets are available now ...

Buddy Fight Sneak Peak

Tomorrow as part of KD Games Night, we will be running a sneak peak for the next Buddyfight release. This event will be limited to a maximum of 8 players. (Unfortunately this event which had been planned for Saturday evening had to be cancelled at the last minute)

Booster Draft Explanation

Booster Draft is a method of play where players have no cards to begin with. They are required to
have 6 Future Card Buddyfight Booster Packs per player, at the moment of play.
Players then open 1 pack at a time, choose a card they would like to put in their deck in a
predetermined order (this is known as the “draft”), and then the decks are built right then and
there!
With this unique style, players get to experience the thrill of drawing and selecting cards, along with
the joy of playing with a different deck each time!

Requirements

1. Played with 2 or more players (Recommended 8 players for maximum fun!)
2. Each player will require 6 Future Card Buddyfight Booster Packs

Deck Building and Special Rulings

1. Players will build a deck consisting of 30 cards (29 cards + 1 buddy card chosen by you)
2. Players are not required to have a flag card
3. Players life points will start at 10
4. Players with no cards in the deck zone will automatically lose the game
5. Players will draw 6 cards into their hand at the start as per normal
6. World restriction does not apply to the Booster Draft deck construction (i.e. you may have a
Dragon World monster and a Magic World monster in your deck)
7. Attributes still work as per normal
8. Standard game rules apply, except you may have more than 4 copies of the same card in
your deck

Rules

1. Decide on the seating arrangement around the table with a random method.
2. Each person will then proceed to open one of their booster packs and check the cards in the pack
3. Players will now choose 1 card and place it face down in front of you.
4. Once all players have chosen one card and placed it in front of them, pass the remainingcards to person on their left (clockwise direction)
5. From the remaining cards handed over, players will then choose another card and add it to the face down card in front of them
6. Once the cards have been given out, open the next booster pack
7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 until the first 3 booster packs have been disseminated 8. Between the third and fourth booster pack, players are encourage to look at what they have drawn thus far in order to plan what other cards they should draw for the remaining few booster packs
9. Starting from the fourth booster pack, pass the cards that you did not draft to the player on the right instead (anti-clockwise direction)
10. Once all 6 packs have been opened and disseminated, the draft is over
11. Each player should ensure that they have 30 cards each and select their buddy from within their deck (Players will play with 29 cards in their deck)

Its that time again!

We its crept up on us a little, but in just a few hours time we will start our first MTG Origins Prerelease event. This time around we have three events which are ...

FRIDAY/SATURDAY Midnight at Tarmount Lane
Eventbrite - MTG Origins Prerelease MIDNIGHT (Must be 18+)

SATURDAY 1pm at The Royal George
Eventbrite - MTG Origins Prerelease SATURDAY

SUNDAY 1pm at the Royal British Legion
Eventbrite - MTG Origins Prerelease SUNDAY

So far Saturday is the most popular event but there is still space on all days.

If you have not been to a prerelease before then there is no better time to give one a try. Origins is the last of the Core Set and could be the last set to have 5 planeswalkers in it!

Prereleases provide you with the earliest possible opportunity to play with the newest cards in Magic. Prereleases are enjoyable casual events that encourage fun over competition.

FORMAT

Prereleases are Sealed Deck format events, where players are given Prerelease Packs and time to construct a 40-card minimum deck.

Prerelease Packs make deck-building more exciting with the inclusion of specialized, “seeded” booster packs and regular booster packs that let players choose a focus for their deck.

Players who are uncomfortable building a Sealed Deck may participate in Open Dueling instead of the main tournament. Open Dueling players use an Intro Pack to experience the new set a week before it hits shelves.

PRIZES

Players get to keep all of the cards opened in their Prerelease Pack or Intro Pack. In addition Prerelease Packs contain a premium foil Prerelease promo to keep. Players who participate in the tournament also have a chance to win additional booster packs of the newest set—an exclusive opportunity to take home even more of the latest cards before they’re available to purchase in stores!

RULES

Prerelease events focus on fun and enjoying the upcoming Magic expansion, allowing players a chance to experience the newest cards in a fun and stress-free environment. That said, as Sealed Deck tournaments, they follow certain rules for deck construction and play.

Decks must be constructed with a minimum of 40 cards
Decks may only be built using cards opened in the Prerelease Packs assigned at the beginning of the event, and no outside cards may be added.

MTG Origins - Good to see them back!

With all the excitement surrounding spoiler season and the influx of new cards in Magic Origins being released, sometimes it is difficult to remember what core sets used to be about – reprints and old favorites coming back. So here is a list of some of the exciting ones...

It has been a while since we've had a sacrifice engine without mana cost in Standard. Not only does this card have the potential to see play in more aggressively-oriented decks , but also is best friends with Liliana, Heretical Healer. Maybe someone will even be able to break the "go-infinite" Boonweaver Giant/Gift of Immortality combo.

This Zombie is back with awesome new art. While we currently have access to a similar effect in Standard creature type cannot be underestimated. With Risen Executioner around, Standard may have a powerful Zombie deck that includes the often forgotten Necromancer's Stockpile and the new Undead Servant.

Courser of Kruphix, make a 4/4 Angel? Constellation is the real deal in conjunction with this old favorite. In the past, Sigil was much harder to activate, with its owner having to play obscure enchantments, some that didn't even impact the board! Until we fight for Zendikar, we can play a deck full of creatures that all make Angels when they enter the battlefield. Don't sleep on the potential of this card.

One of my all time favourite cards. It's hard to describe how powerful it feels to have a creature in play and draw a card for just two mana. Elvish Visionary is that old familiar feeling and, frankly, it has a better creature type. Looks like elf decks are going to be good again!

Just seems really good for white and I recon its going to see a bit of play. Finally I could not finish with out ...

We already have a lot of goblins in standard and many of them are present in some really good red decks. If you consider that alongside the fact that one of them is Goblin Rabblemaster, you'd better have red decks on your radar. The fact of the matter is, whether you decide to simply compliment your red deck with Piledriver as one of your two drops of choice or choose to push the theme with cards like Subterranean Scout and Obelisk of Urd, Goblin Piledriver will be an all-star.

Want to start playing with these cards then why not head along to one of our prerelease events, we have Midnight in just a few hours time and then of course there is Saturday and Sunday events at the more reasonable time of 1pm. If you want to come but have not already purchased a ticket let me know as soon as you can and you can pay on the day!

8 years on!

Today 8 years ago I first open the doors of Kids Dreams, a toy shop at number 79 Boundary Road in Hove. Within a few months we started selling games such as Warhammer and MTG. Since then a lot has changed including our product ranges, but we are at heart still the same.

Our first adverts had the tag line 'Treat your children to a piece of your childhood' which referred to many of the traditional toys that we sold. This is still however a major part of what is now KD Games. We sell some great games many of which you can play as a family. Playing board games was a big part of my childhood and we hope that even in the digital age it will still be a part of our children's lives as well.

We have traded in a number of locations and held many many events throughout the area in all kinds of settings. In fact tonight we are running our regular Tuesday Night gaming evening tonight, which we hope you can come along to at the Royal George on the Holmbush Roundabout.

Magic the Gathering has been a big part of the business since Paddy convinced me to stock it and this weekend we will host our 19th MTG prerelease which started with Mirroden Beseiged back in 2011. I think some of you may have attended all of them, which is incredible!

These 8 years have brought many great memories and introduced me and my family to some great people. Some of our customers are still attending our events and buying our products since they first started at 'Young Guns' our first games club.

So today I would like to thank all of our customers for sticking with us for the last 8 years and hope that you will continue to be part of our community in the months/years to come!

The new MTG set is called Origins so it seems a perfect time to celebrate where KD Games came from...

Smash Up : Munchkin

History records many great pairings. Death and taxes. Peanut butter and chocolate. Cats and cheeseburgers.

Now we’ve smashed up Munchkin with Smash Up and it will be available to play this SEPTEMBER!

Smash Up is the game where each player smashes two weird factions together and tries to crush all the others. The factions in this set are Munchkin races and classes: Orcs, Warriors, Halflings, Clerics, Dwarves, Elves, Thieves, and Mages! All the factions have different powers, and every team-up is different.

This set may be played by itself, but all the factions are fully compatible with your existing Smash Up sets. There are also two brand-new card types. Monsters lurk around the bases, and Treasures give you new rewards when you smash a base!

· Eight entirely new decks!

· New Monster and Treasure cards!

· Amazing new Munchkin art drawn by John Kovalic and painted by Francisco Rico Torres and Gong Studios!

Players: 2-4
Ages: 12+
Playing Time: 45 minutes

THURSDAY NIGHT MAGIC

This Thursday we are going to be running our first of what we hope will become a regular extra Competitive MTG Event!
The event is in many ways the same as Friday Night Magic in that it will cost £3 per player and there will be booster prizes dependent on the number of players and FNM Promo cards for the winners. The main difference will be the formats. FNM will stay Standard and Modern but Thursday will offer players a choice of other fun formats. Kicking things of will be 'TINY LEADERS' ...

Here is the current set of rules designed for the format. Players attention is drawn particularly to the rules regarding side board which is very specific to this format. If you are unsure on any of the rulings or the Banned list which follows after the rules then please feel free to contact either Nathan or myself.

Comprehensive Rules

905 Tiny Leaders

905.1 – In the Tiny Leaders variant of Magic: the Gathering, each deck is led by a legendary creature designated as that deck's Commander. This format’s rules are maintained by an independent rules committee, who can be contacted via email at: overlords.TL@gmail.com; or by direct messaging the Tiny Leaders Facebook page, or Reddit moderators at www.facebook.com/r/TinyLeaders and www.reddit.com/r/TinyLeaders respectively.

905.2 – The Tiny Leaders format is a two-player format. It may also use multiplayer rules, in which case the default format is multiplayer Free-for-All, see 806 “Free-for-All Variant”.

905.3 – Each deck has a legendary creature who represents the deck and is accessible to its owner from the beginning of the game. This card is called the Commander. This is not a characteristic of the card, rather it is an attribute of the card. A commander that is a copy of another card is still a commander, and a card copying a commander doesn't copy being a commander. This creature also determines which cards may be played in the deck – see 903.3

905.4 Tiny Leaders uses the concept of colour identity see
903.4 for a complete explanation of colour identity. In short, the colour identity of a card is the colour of each mana symbol on that card and the colour of any colour indicators on that card.

905.5 Each Tiny Leaders deck is subject to the following deck construction rules.

905.5a Each deck must contain exactly 50 cards, including its commander.

905.5b Each card must have a converted mana cost of three or less. Cards with {x} in their mana cost count X as zero for this purpose. Split cards and double-faced cards are legal only if both of their halves would be legal independently.

905.5c Other than basic lands, each card in a Tiny Leaders deck must have a different English name.

905.5d A card can be included in a Tiny Leaders deck only if every colour in its colour identity is also found in the colour identity of the deck’s commander.

905.5e A card with a basic land type can be included in a Tiny Leaders deck only if every colour of mana it could produce is also found in the colour identity of the deck’s commander.

905.5f Each player may also have a sideboard (see rule 100.4), which may contain no more than ten cards. The singleton rule (905.5c) applies to both the combined deck and sideboard.

905.6 At the beginning of the game, each player places their commander face up in the command zone where it is visible to all players. Then each player shuffles the cards in their library so that the position of no card can be determined by either player.

905.7 The starting player is then determined by any mutually agreeable random method. Once the starting player has been determined, each player’s life total becomes 25 and each player draws a hand of seven (7) cards.

905.8 Players may then mulligan. To mulligan, each player announces their intention to mulligan or keep. If a player keeps, they are not allowed to mulligan further. Each player who chose to mulligan then shuffles the cards in their hand into their library and draw one less card than they shuffled into their library this way. Players who have not yet kept may repeat this process any number of times.

905.8a Players may not choose to mulligan if they have no cards in their hand.

905.9 If a player would add mana of a colour not included in their commander’s colour identity to their mana pool, that player adds that much colourless mana to their mana pool instead.

905.10 A player may cast their commander from the Command zone.

905.10a Players must pay an additional {2} to cast their commander from the command zone for each time their commander has been cast from the command zone that game.

905.11 If a commander would enter its owner’s graveyard from anywhere or enter the exile zones from anywhere, its owner may choose to place it in the command zone instead.

905.12 If a card is put into the exile zone face-down, and a player may look at that card, that player does so. If that card is a commander owned by another player, that player reveals that card and puts it into the command zone. If that card is their commander, they may reveal it, if they do they may put it in the command zone.

COMPREHENSIVE RULES Author: Matthew Turnbull, Level 2 Judge.

The Game - Releasing this September

Nominated for the 2015 Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year)!

The Game: Are You Ready to Play? is a cooperative card game for one to five players. Together, they must try to play all of the cards, numbered 2 through 99, into four piles - two piles with ascending numbers and two with descending numbers. The hook is that the players are not allowed to announce the numbers they have in their hand during the game. Play ends when a player cannot play any cards in hand on their turn.

The trick is, you aren’t allowed to tell anyone else what cards you have, so you’ll constantly be on edge as each card played could upset your best-laid plans. The Game is for 1- 5 players, ages 8 and up, and plays in about 20 minutes.
