CATCH EM ALL Pokemon advent calendar

DITCH the typical chocolate advent calendars and spice up your countdown with a Pokemon-themed advent calendar.

Young or old, fans of the franchise will definitely appreciate this Pokemon advent calendar as a refreshing twist on the classic chocolate versions. And, seeing as it's priced at just £45, it's never been a better time to catch 'em all.

From miniature models of your favourite Pokemon growing up to surprise booster packs, there's something for every avid Pokemon fan to look forward to on the countdown to Christmas.

While you could very much wait until Christmas day to shower your friend or loved one with memorabilia, their current favourite show or a huge hit of nostalgia for the older generation.

It's worth noting that if the person you're buying for is already an avid Pokemon card collector, this advent calendar definitely is a great option.

The Pokemon Advent Calendar provides a fun way to countdown to Christmas with the surprise of boosters or specific cards behind each door that you then get to open to discover whether or not you've managed to pull a rare card.

The calendar provided 76 random cards and seven Christmas-themed card additions, so there's a lot to get through.

Since there are 25 doors, it will keep anyone who grabs one entertained for the entire leadup to Christmas.

The cards are spaced out extremely well within the calendar, so you won't be bombarded with booster packs the entire time; sometimes, you'll grab a Christmas print card and others.

It could be a cute little sticker sheet you can use to decorate your laptop.

The Lost Caverns of Ixalan League

To celebrate the release of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, WPN stores can now run weekly League events. This is a format that our community at KD Games has been doing after the release of a new set for a while and is a really fun and challenging format that is great for new and experienced players alike.

When joining the League, each player purchases 3 The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Draft Boosters and will get a box to keep their league cards in.

Using their sealed pool of 3 Draft Boosters, players build a 30-card deck. Players will then battle each other in a best of three games. playing as many opponents as they can each week.

As an additional bit of fun, for this league players will select faction of their choice to represent in the league. The factions are:

  • Dinosaurs
  • Merfolk
  • Pirates
  • Vampires

Note that players do not need to build their deck around the creature type of their faction—the faction is in name only. Players will earn points for themselves and for the faction/team that they belong to.

Initially I have set the league ready for 8 players so that there will be two players in each team, however more players a welcome as we have plenty of boxes and boosters!!

Each week, players can purchase additional The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Draft add to their deck. After three losses, players can also purchase another one.

The League kicks off on November 25th at 2pm, the week after the release of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan!

Prize packs will be awarded at the end of the league to winning teams and players.

Wow, that went fast!

This week marks a big anniversary for KD Games.

On 12th November 2013 we closed the doors on our toy shop Kids Dreams. For those of you that did not shop with then, that is where the KD comes from.

I posted on that day an article call 'Is it the end of a dream' and spent the next few days deciding what the immediate future was. On 14th I announced that we would try and carry on, but would be concentrating on just games. From the flames of Kids Dreams, KD Games was born.

Back then I did not have a premises to trade from and organised play for MTG, Pokemon, etc was looking very uncertain. Our first events as KD Games were held in the function room of the Royal George in Shoreham before we were fortunate enough to move to No 8 Tarmount Lane.

KD Game is now back on the High Street and I am so pleased to say that ... 'The dream did not end in 2013, if anything the dream got bigger and the future got brighter'

Thank you so much to everyone that has contributed to our gaming community and given me some truely special memories over the last 10 years. Lets hope the next 10 years continue to be so kind.

Also, look out this weekend for some Anniversary offers!!!

The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Prerelease

Tonight it is the first of our Lost Caverns of Ixalan Prerelease Events.

Starting at 7pm, players will get the first chance to play with the new MTG set, which is released next weekend.

How exactly does this work out? Let me walk you through it.

When you sit down on Prerelease day, you're going to get handed a Prerelease Pack for The Lost Caverns of Ixalan.

While there are many things in here, like a spindown life counter for tracking your life total and a fun little insert with some information and tips, the most important are these six Draft Boosters:

Open them all and check out your new stack of cards. There will also be a foil-stamped rare or mythic rare card inside that you can play—make sure to pull that one out.

Okay, boosters open? Well, you're ready to build a deck!

But where do you even start?

Well, first thing's first, you should know what you're trying to do. In Sealed Deck, you only need 40 cards, not 60 or 100. You can get as many additional basic lands as you want from the store.

A good rule of thumb is to play 17 lands. So, all things said and done, you're only looking to play about 23 nonland cards from the cards you open. That's your goal: identify the 23 cards to play.

Okay, sounds a bit easier. How do you go about picking those cards?

Try sorting your cards by color first. Make eight piles: one for each color, one for any multicolor cards, one for colorless cards, and one for lands. As you're going through, you'll have a chance to read the cards and see what interests you.

You'll want to whittle your choices down to two colors. You can sometimes "splash" a third, playing two colors as your base and a couple powerful cards or additional costs of another color, but I'd really focus on the two colors you want here. You can select them in any ways you want—maybe you just like those colors—but three things to keep an eye out for are:Any strong rares in those colors that you're excited to play
A lot of removal cards (Cards which destroy or otherwise deal with your opponent's creatures.)
Evasion (A lot of Sealed Deck games are won with flying creatures or hard-to-block cards.)

Additionally, another huge element to look out for are good synergies and multicolor cards. Every two-color pairing in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan has a theme, and knowing what those are can clue you in to which colors to play. These are detailed in an insert on the top of every Draft Booster display box, but here it is for easy reference as well:

Once you've chosen your colors, it's important to think about your mana curve. This helps to ensure that you have creatures at every turn of the game to cast. If everything costs six mana, you're going to be way behind on playing creatures, and if everything costs two mana, you're going to get outclassed in the late game.

Here's how to check your mana curve. First, lay your creatures out in mana-value order from left to right. So, all creatures that cost one mana, then all creatures that cost two, and so on. Only lay out noncreatures here if they're cards you are planning to play as soon as you have that much mana—for example, you might play an Equipment on turn two, so that counts as a two-drop, but you're probably not playing a removal spell on turn two.

For Limited in general—and this is just a guideline—I'd look to play something like this:1 mana: 0–2
  • 2 mana: 4–6
  • 3 mana: 3–5
  • 4 mana: 2–4
  • 5 mana 1–3
  • 6+ mana: 0–2

Once you have those figured out, go ahead and add in your noncreature spells. You will probably want to play all your removal spells to deal with your opponents' creatures. Beyond that, it's nice to have ways to pump up your creatures at instant speed and ways to draw cards. But you can season to taste depending on what you think might work well in your deck.

And there you have it! When you're finished, you should have a 40-card deck. You can play more than 40 cards, but I would strongly advise against it: every card you play beyond 40 just worsens the odds of drawing your best cards.

So, that's how you build a sealed deck.

On Saturday every player that attends our event will get an additional promo card at the end of the event along with the two set booster prize packs which is ...

Dino-Sized December Event

During December we will be running Dino-Sized Draft events. What is that I hear you say? In a Dino-Sized Draft each player in a pod of 8 starts the Draft with four Draft Booster packs instead of the usual three. This extra round increases the available card pool for players by a significant margin, allowing for even more cool combos and synergies to come from deck building.

We will use Draft Boosters from any of the following releases to run this event (subject to availabilty at the time):
  • Phyrexia: All Will Be One
  • March of the Machine
  • The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth™
  • Wilds of Eldraine
  • The Lost Caverns of Ixalan
More details will follow in December - so watch this space!

Ice Cool 2

ICECOOL2 is an expansion – but also standalone game – to its predecessor, ICECOOL. If you say the name out loud it sounds a bit like ‘Ice School’, which is exactly where this game takes place. In a school, filled with ice. A school for penguins, that are skipping class and trying to skid around the halls to collect fish…

Like Brian Gomez’s original, ICECOOL2 is a flicking game that will test your dexterity skills. It comes with four plastic penguins with rounded bases, which are bottom-heavy. When you flick them, they wobble in an erratic manner, mimicking a penguin slipping on a real icy surface.

Three players are truant penguins, trying to skid their way around the school. The aim’s the same: collect wooden fish that sit above doorways. Players gain these as they flick their penguin through the doorway. It’s easier said than done, though! These fish are like pegs and they clip the school layout together. Even the base of ICECOOL2’s box gets used to construct the school!

This plays almost identical to ICECOOL, but it comes with trickshots on the 1-point fish cards. Combine this board with the original ICECOOL though, and you can build a giant school layout. The rulebook offers suggested designs, or you can get creative and construct your own.

ICECOOL2 is a gem of a dexterity game, which appeals to both children and adults alike.

Player Count: 2-4 players (up to 8, if combined with ICECOOL)
Time: 30 minutes
Age: 6+
