Goonies

NEW THIS WEEK!

In The Goonies: Adventure Card Game, you play as a ragtag group of kids from the Goon Docks neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon. You must join together on a quest to find the treasure of legendary pirate One-Eyed Willy so that you can save your homes from demolition! You will need to keep your wits about you and use your unique skills to avoid One-Eyed Willy's booby traps and also stay one step ahead of the Fratellis, a family of criminals intent on claiming the treasure for themselves.

In this cooperative game, you'll work with your fellow Goonies, taking actions to clear obstacles, defeat the Fratellis, and discover secret paths to long-lost treasure.

You all win the game if you discover the hidden paths to One-Eyed Willy's ship and manage to secure his booty. But if too many obstacles mount up, you run out of event cards, or too many Fratellis hit the board, it's all over...

Ditto comes to Pokemon Go

Having caught my first Ditto this morning, I thought I would let everyone know ubout the new arrival incase they missed it like I did.

Pokémon trainers won’t be able to see the new creature on the map as it is hiding in plain sight, mimicking any other monster in the game

Pokémon Go has finally given players a big reason to come back to the game: the introduction of the first new Pokemon since it launched back in July.

Pokémon trainers can now catch Ditto, an amorphous blob that can transform into any other Pokemon using its signature move “mimic”. But there’s a catch.

You won’t see Ditto on the world map, the overview screen where players see which Pokémon are around them. That’s because it’s hiding in plain sight, disguised as other Pokémon. In other words, that Ratatta or Pidgey you wouldn’t normally bother with? If you catch it, it might be a Ditto.

If someone else nearby you has caught the Ditto in the area already, it will show up marked in its true form.

Once you’ve caught Ditto, it acts largely like you’d expect. You can take it to a Pokémon gym, where it will transform itself into a copy of the first Pokémon you fight, stealing its moves. Unless it’s another Ditto, in which case both blobs will sit there, uselessly blobbing at each other with a basic attack.

New to Board Games?

With Christmas just around the corner, it might be time to buy a new game for the family to enjoy after dinner on the big day. So today I thought i would have a look at a few of my old favourites and also some of the new ones that have arrived this year.

First up is possibly my favourite board game...

Image result for ticket to ride
Ticket to Ride is a great family game which can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. It is easy to learn and fairly quick to play. This is the first game that I played with my family where we could all play with out the need to adjust the rules a bit for the children. In fact my daughter who was 7 at the time picked up so quick and was on a bit of a winning streak for a while. This is a great 'entry' game for people that have not played a board game and might be daunted by the idea of complex, time consuming mechanics. The game lasts about 45 mins and has great replayability. There a now numerous expansions available which make the game even better.

Next we have Carassonne, the game where you build a map of cities and gain points for building roads, farms and cities. It is again really simple to play and is very quick. It takes about 25 minutes and has very little set up required. This game also has many different expansions to make the game a little more interesting and complex.

Then there is Catan, which has been around for many many years. It is a really simple trading game in which players build roads and towns around differing types of resource and then try to make deals for other resources with other players to get the points that they need to win. It is a great social game with a slightly more complex rules structure than the other two games mentioned but still really easy to learn.

Splendor is another one of my family favourites,it is a game of chip-collecting and card development. Players are merchants of the Renaissance trying to buy gem mines, means of transportation, shops—all in order to acquire the most prestige points. If you're wealthy enough, you might even receive a visit from a noble at some point, which of course will further increase your prestige. The game looks great and is again very quick to learn.
Image result for splendor board game

This yeat has seen some great releases with one of the best being Codenames. In Codenames, two teams compete to see who can make contact with all of their agents first. Spymasters give one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the board. Their teammates try to guess words of the right color while avoiding those that belong to the opposing team. And everyone wants to avoid the assassin.

Of course this is just a small selection but they are all great Christmas purchases and all play exceptionally well, especially with families and first time gamers. Other titles worth a look would include Pandemic, Munchkin, Dobble, Love Letter, 8 Minute Empire, Small World, Flick Em Up, Bang the Dice Game, Seven Wonders, Timeline.....

The list could probably go on for some time. If you want to come in a try any of the games that I have in stock then you are always welcome to do so. I have several demo copies and most only take a few minutes to learn. If you wnt a particular game then send me a message and I will see what I can do.

Final Fantasy TCG - How to Play

At CONQUEST a couple of weeks back, we had the first of the Final Fantasy Card Game Decks and Boosters in and played it for the first time. Since then I have had a few people ask how to play this game. We have managed to run a couple of demo games particularily at Gambit Sunday but I thought it may help to see if there was any tutorial videos online. I have found this one which covers the basics with the games creator...

If you think this is a game you would like to try please ask for a demo at the shop or one of our events.

The third will a foil card of any rarity OR a Kaladesh Masterpiece (with a 1 in 33 chance)! All cards will be from one of the 5 Standard legal sets.

Pokemon Go Gen 2 - Coming Soon?

Pokemon Go might not be as popular with mobile gamers as it was this past summer, but there are still plenty of players out there. The game keeps getting more updates and features intended to keep users entertained, and Niantic is about to release 100 additional Pokemon monsters for fans to chase down and catch. That’s great news for anyone who has already captured the initial 151 Pokemon in the game, and for anyone who might currently be bored of the game.

Niantic released a new update for iPhone and Android this week, and code inside the application reveals there are 100 “Gen 2” Pokemon animals waiting to be caught.

It’s not clear at this time when the new monsters will make their debut, but it shouldn’t be too long considering that they’re already present in the game’s code and on Niantic’s official site. However, Niantic did not mention them specifically in announcements earlier this week. The company did say in posts on its blog and on social media that the “Nearby” feature is expanding to additional markets, and it announced its latest iPhone and Android update. But there was no mention of the new Pokemon.

Here are some of them, complete with descriptions and powers.

Doctor Strange - Dice Masters

So with there being a little bit of Dice Masters planned for this evening, I have turned my eye to a new team. So what shall I build?

I finally decided to have a look at the Doctor Strange Team Pack and see if that would make a good starting point. First look and its a pretty standard from the pack selection of cards, however there are a few cards that definitely make this a worthwhile purchase, and a couple that could possibly see competitive play.

First the new  Affiliations

This is not actually new as it was introduced in the DC Green Arrow and The Flash set  but as I have not open any of those yet it is new to me.

Now the important bit the cards...

All of the Ancient One’s cards do something in regards to other Mystics, whether it’s your opponent’s or your own. Of the three, The Original Sorcerer Supreme is the best of them. He’s still really pricey, but his ability is good if you’re running primarily Mystics. I

Clea is a pretty high priced card and although a 7/7 is unlikely to make it in to my final team.

Doctor Strange has got great stats and okay fielding costs, but for him to mke the team I think I would have to use the first one and put in some useful action dice.

Burning Ambition is my favorite of the three Dormammu, but not entirely sure how I am going to use him.

This I really like and I think it with its lower cost is much more usable than some of the other cards so far.

Mindless Ones is a pretty solid card in all of its forms so its just a case of picking which one.

I love Scarlet Witch, I love the dice, the art and all of the cards. This is a definate.

Wong could possibly see some play outside of casual events. All of Wong’s cards have the Ally keyword, meaning they count as Sidekick dice while in the Field Zone. He’s got decent stats, great fielding costs, and the most expensive of the purchase costs is three. Expert of Kamar-Taj also has Fast which allows him to deal his combat damage first. Dedicated to the Ancient One has this interesting direct damage ability that you can use when he’s fielded. Faithful Servant has a static effect that buffs all other Sidekick dice while he’s active.

If you want to have a look at the dice, here they are. The best by far is Scarlet Witch in my opinion.
