Fast and Furious

The engines are revving and Fast & Furious: Full Throttle is about to tear away from the start line.  Before it does, we are sounding the call for folks who want to get a great deal on reserving the game in advance, and being one of the first people in the world to get the game!

Fast & Furious: Full Throttle is a board game that begins with players choosing their own course to race through the streets of the game board, by placing the Start and Finish cards and tracing a path between them. Any course that the players choose will hold its own challenges and dictate how many Upgrades players can add to their cars.
Players then set up their street cars by assigning Upgrade tokens to a variety of slots on their Driver Consoles. Each of the nine different Upgrades allows a special move to be chosen during the game, such as the Upgrades Aerodynamics, that permits a car token to move diagonally; and Nitrous, that allows a card to move an extra 1 to 6 spaces.
Once the players have set up their street cars, they move their car token to the Start line and draw a hand of Gear Cards. It is by playing these cards, and flipping an equal number from the deck, that the players move their car tokens along the spaces on the game board towards the Finish line. Gear Cards can be played in sets for a better chance of moving the perfect distance, or played singularly with more risk of flipping a card that results in a spin out or incurring a speed penalty. All the while players are jostling for position and choosing when to use their street car's upgrades and make their move.
Optional Driver cards add a special rule and extra personality to each player's driving.
  • Simple yet challenging card-driven play.
  • A double-sided game board where you set the courses and race along whatever streets you dare.
  • You decide the length of the game. Upgrade your car to your own personal preferences, with 9 different ways to soup up your ride.
  • Play as one of 12 characters from the movies.
Read through the rules and what to see it all in action? Check out the rules rundown presented by Michael Fox from The Little Metal Dog Show, right here!

A Note to Parents: Fast & Furious is rated PG-13.

Gambit Sunday

Tomorrow it is Gambit Sunday and it will be at a new venue here in Shoreham...

KD Games will be there all day as usual and I will be bring a selection of items for people to buy as well as some of our demo games for you to use.

I will probably not bring as much as I do normally for Gambit Sunday as I will have a car full of the Gambit scenery and I do not know how much space I will have to display things, so if there is something you want me to bring please let me know and I will see what I can do.

There will be a Vanguard Tournament in the evening but other than that I have not planned any particular activities. That said if there is something that you wish to do please let me know and I am sure we can sort something out.

At last the wait is over ...

Due in tomorrow ...

“The soulless ones shall be the harbingers of dark fate. Then shall come the living dead, the progeny, then the thirsting ones, the forever damned, and the galaxy shall run red as the blood of Eldanesh.”
–Translation of an Eldar artifact, Codex Necrons

From the ancient depths of time before the galaxy was consumed by war, a new threat now emerges from its aeon-long slumber: the Necrons have begun to awaken once more. No loyal servant of the Imperium could fathom how many Tomb Worlds still lie dormant, only awaiting some mysterious signal to rise and spread doom across the civilised worlds. Now, as the Necrons ascend and swell their armies with slaves, all the Traxis sector will learn to fear these mechanical terrors.

Legions of Death introduces the Necrons as a new playable faction for Warhammer 40,000: Conquest. Two new warlords lead the Necron forces in the Traxis sector, and new mechanics evoke the theme of a Necron invasion whenever you lead them into battle. As the Necrons, you can enslave the peoples of the galaxy, filling your deck with units from other factions that are forced to fight alongside you. Although the Necrons hold the spotlight in this deluxe expansion, you’ll also find a new unit for each of the other eight factions alongside new neutral cards that promise to impact the game in entirely new ways!

Uberstaks

UberStax is an injection molded (prototypes were 3D printed) Universal Game Piece Holder, with a difference. With ease, you can fit the UberStax racks together to build the size and orientation needed for the game pieces in play.

Pieces are molded with pins and grooves to allow Stax to be built up taller and wider than a single rack providing ample space for cards, tiles, tokens or anything else you can make fit (Smartphone? Tablet? Score sheet?).

For small games, use just 2 plates to build a single plate rack. 3 plates, allow you to go two wide, and 6 plates to go two wide and two high.

There are countless ways to configure UberStax pieces. They can be built horizontally and stacked vertically to accomodate any gameplay scenario or purpose. The more pieces you have, the more elaborate your configurations can be. It all starts with a strong base, which needs to expand to provide stability as more pieces are added to the configuration.

These should be with us next week but are likely to be quite popular, so if you want any please ask soon!

MTG Changes

Introducing Planeswalker Decks & Bundle

"With the release of the fall set, Kaladesh, on September 30, 2016, we'll be introducing two new product types to Magic: The Gathering.

Planeswalker Decks will serve as a new introductory product, providing a more thematically resonant experience and exciting new Standard legal Planeswalkers not found anywhere else.

We'll also introduce the Bundle. The Bundle offers the same features as a Fat Pack for engaged Magic players plus an additional booster, but the new name more accurately reflects the type of content it offers.

Planeswalker Decks

Planeswalker Decks are designed as the best first purchase for a new player, after they've learned the basics of the game—either through Welcome Decks or Magic Duels—but its features are meant to appeal to experienced players as well.

Beginning with Kaladesh in September 2016, every Magic set will offer two Planeswalker Decks (available in all eleven languages), each built and highly themed around a Planeswalker character relevant to the current block.

Each preconstructed 60-card deck will include:
1 copy of a mythic rare Planeswalker
2 copies of a rare spell that can help find and play the Planeswalker card
And many more cards that benefit from—and synergize with—the Planeswalker card

These decks will generally be two colors, will play into the mechanical themes of the block, often making use of new keyword mechanics, and will be Standard legal.

Two booster packs from the associated block will also be packaged with each deck.

Planeswalker Decks will be available for Open Dueling, beginning with Kaladesh Prerelease, and will provide a similar experience as Intro Pack Wars for new player events.

Eldritch Moon will be the last set that includes Intro Packs.
Bundle

With the release of Kaladesh this September, we will also premiere the Bundle.

We've designed the Bundle as a comprehensive product for engaged Magic players to purchase in order to quickly get to know the newest set.

The Bundle will feature:
A reusable box for card storage
An 80-card land pack
10 booster packs
1 Spindown life counter
Rules reference card
And a Player's Guide that includes an encyclopedia of every card from the current set

The Bundle is aimed at players who have competence in Magic play and are eager to invest in the game on a regular basis.

Eldritch Moon will be the last set that includes a Fat Pack."

Bang - Back in Stock

"The Outlaws hunt the Sheriff. The Sheriff hunts the Outlaws. The Renegade plots secretly, ready to take one side or the other. Bullets fly. Who among the gunmen is a Deputy, ready to sacrifice himself for the Sheriff? And who is a merciless Outlaw, willing to kill him? If you want to find out, just draw (your cards)!" (From back of box)
The card game BANG! recreates an old-fashioned spaghetti western shoot-out, with each player randomly receiving a Character card to determine special abilities, and a secret Role card to determine their goal.
Four different Roles are available, each with a unique victory condition:
  • Sheriff - Kill all Outlaws and the Renegade
  • Deputy - Protect the Sheriff and kill any Outlaws
  • Outlaw - Kill the Sheriff
  • Renegade - Be the last person standing
A player's Role is kept secret, except for the Sheriff. Character cards are placed face up on table, and also track strength (hand limit) in addition to special ability.
There are 22 different types of cards in the draw deck. Most common are the BANG! cards, which let you shoot at another player, assuming the target is within "range" of your current gun. The target player can play a "MISSED!" card to dodge the shot. Other cards can provide temporary boosts while in play (for example, different guns to improve your firing range) and special one-time effects to help you or hinder your opponents (such as Beer to restore health, or Barrels to hide behind during a shootout). A horse is useful for keeping your distance from unruly neighbors, while the Winchester can hit a target at range 5. The Gatling is a deadly exception where range doesn't matter: it can only be used once, but targets all other players at the table!

Kodama

Due in next week is Kodama: The Tree Spirits

The forest is growing fast! As caretakers for Kodama, the tree spirits, you must keep the forest a healthy and lush home for your little friends. Whoever cares for their Kodama best will be remembered for generations!

From the designer of the hit game Kigi, Kodama: The Tree Spirits branches out into a fun new way to play! Grow your tree by placing cards in clever arrangements, being careful to leave room for future growth. At the end of each season, one Kodama will award you points for how well your tree suits its needs. With beautiful art and innovative mechanics, Kodama is an inTREEguing game for the whole family.

Wizkids League

This weekend it is Wizkids League from 12:30pm and we will have this great OP figure to give to the days winner...

At 50 points, this figure represents the more ethereal side of Professor X as he takes to the battlefield in astral projection form! This clear-sculpted take on Professor X is meant for harassing your opponent and disrupting whatever plans they may have had, turning them to your advantage. His trait, Let Me Help You Clear Your Head states that adjacent opposing characters can’t use the EFFECT of equipped items; this includes any equipped Relic or Possession figures like Malice or Proteus (who are both in the Marvel HeroClix: Uncanny X-Men set)! Keeping in the “spirit” of his astral form, he begins with the movement special You Think You’re Really Here? that lets him use Phasing/Teleport and Mind Control without taking any feedback damage. Early dial this is his only offensive capability, as he has 0 damage despite having a 7 square range value. On his next two clicks he gains more utility, being able to cancel an opposing character’s powers or abilities with Outwit. Later on he loses his ability to phase about but gains regular Mind Control and Incapacitate. Rounding out his powers, he starts with Super Sense and a high defense value, though as he loses the concentration to evade attacks he picks up Shape Change and Willpower.

At 50 points he fits conveniently on nearly any team with his fellow X-Men to make use of their Team Ability and even meshes well with any figure that shares his Illuminati, New Mutants, or X-Men keywords. This is a thinking-player’s piece. He may not have many obvious offensive options, but your opponent won’t be able to ignore the ghostly spectre of Professor X on your side of the table!

Thin Ice - Project Funded!

Thank you everyone that has backed out kickstarter, we have now reached our funding goal which is amazing, if you have not had a chance to look at the game here is a breakdown of what it is all about ...

You move on an ever-diminishing ice sheet represented by the tiles whilst trying not to get stranded on a separated ice floe and drifting away.  Make pacts, break pacts, laugh, despair and come face-to-face with the polar bear - survival has never been so much fun!
...and if that's not challenging enough, a deck of event cards brings an added level of dirty tricks, audacious actions and stress-relieving laughter.
The winner in Thin Ice termed the “survivor” is the last player to be able to keep moving on the ever shrinking ice.
If you can’t keep moving then a dip into the sea becomes your last action and becoming separated on a single ice floe will be your final farewell to the group.

Each game uses the 4 main types of double-sided tiles:

Set-up is simple - The Ice hole is placed in the center and a grid of tiles ice face up made around it.  The polar bear is "asleep" (not for long!) on its side in the middle and the meeples placed adjacent to it.  That's it - ready to play.....
A 3-4 player game uses a 5 x 5 tile grid, a 5-6 player game a 6x6 tile grid.

Play occurs in a clockwise direction starting with the youngest:
A player's turn: a player can do 3 actions in any order of their choosing:
a)  move your meeple to any adjacent tile (with no other playing piece on) and turn over the tile just moved off from to its cracked side
b)  slide an uncracked tile with no other playing piece on (up, down, left or right) one space
c)  roll the dice & carry out the action
~
Example of a turn: The Green Meeple player movesslides and rolls
a)  Moves:  the green meeple is moved to the left and the tile it moved from is turned over to show that it is now cracked
b)  Slides:  a tile (top right) is slide one space to the right
c)   Roll:  the die is rolled and according to the roll the player decided which ice tile to crack and turns it over to its cracked side
The die is passed to the next player clockwise and their turn begins....

1) When a cracked tile is moved off of it is discarded.
2) When a tile is no longer adjacent to another tile it is adrift and discarded.
So before long space is limited and its every meeple for itself....

Sorry - I'm showing my age - but hey, Highlander, what a film.

If a Polar Bear symbol is rolled on the die the Polar Bear can be moved onto any adjacent tile or sea space (of course Polar Bears can swim!). A player on the space the Polar Bear is moved onto is moved to any spare adjacent tile (but not the one the bear is moving from) ....unfortunately, if no adjacent tile is available then a jump into the sea is the meeple's last action as shown below for Mr Yellow!

Mr Yellow has strayed to close to the icy edge and another player during their turn slides the connecting ice tile away.  Mr Yellow is no longer adjacent to another tile so is adrift and lost at sea.

Mr Yellow has come a cropper again!  The yellow meeple has to move and unfortunately the sea is the only place available apart from the Killer Whale.....either way, Ms Scarlett is thesurvivor - although not in the most favourable of situations!!

  • the Killer Whale, what is that used for?
  • the tactics and strategies to stay alive?
.....well that would be spoiling all the fun wouldn't it!

The Core game playthrough video below shows the game in motion:

Note:  The game only seems to take about 8 minutes because all the umming and arrhing and banter (the best bit!!!)  was edited out as not to bore the pants off of you.
Also you will not that towards the end of the game the players don't bother to take the "adrift" tiles from the table as they know they will have no further affect on the game and we are just such a laid back bunch!

The intermediate game uses the Core rules + Event cards.
The Event cards allow players to perform actions both during their turn or during specific times during the game to hinder their opponents or help their own chances of survival.
Example of an Event card:

The Green meeple uses the "Mighty Leap" card to get out of a potential spot of bother:

Each player has a hand of 2 Event cards which can be used or discarded and refreshed throughout the game.
The Intermediate game playthrough video below shows the cards in use:
