Vanguard Sneak Peak

This coming TUESDAY at the RoyalGeorge on the Holmbush roundabout in Shoreham we will be holding:

A facebook event will be created so please confirm you attendance! If you are not on the list and want to be then simply comment on this post and I will get you invited!

The registration for the event will open at 6:30pm and I hope to get things started by 7:00pm at the latest!

The cost will be £17 as normal and for those who have not been before the format will be as follows....

Players will use he six boosters to 'draft' a deck to play in three rounds of a 'swiss' tournament o find the sneak peak champion!

What is Booster Draft Booster Draft?

Booster Draft is a method of play which involves purchasing, opening and building a deck straight away for a game!

Fighters open the packs and choose a card he or she would like to use in a predetermined order (this is known as a “draft”), and decks are built right there and then!

With this unique style, fighters get to experience the thrill of selecting cards, and the joy of playing with a different deck every time!

How to do a Draft?

1. Decide on the seating arrangement around the table with a random method.

2. Each person will open one pack, and check the cards inside that pack.

3. Choose a card and place it face down in front of you. (On you first pick for a pack you will take a trigger unit and one other card) Fighters may not peek at the face down cards.

4. Once everyone has chosen their cards, all fighters will pass the rest of the cards in hand to the person on the left, in a clockwise direction.

5. With the cards received from the fighter on the right, choose a card and place it face down. Once everyone is done, pass the rest of the cards in hand to the left again. Repeat until all the cards have been taken.

6. Between the third and fourth pack, you may check your own face down cards.

Starting from the fourth pack, pass the cards in hand to the person on your
right(anti-clockwise).

7. Once all 6 packs have been opened and passed around, the draft ends. The fight will now begin with the 30 cards chosen and formed as a deck!

Deck building
1. The 30 chosen cards becomes your deck.

2. The rules which restrict only 4 of the same card, as well as only 4 heal triggers in a deck do not apply here.

Game conditions
The basic rules of Cardfight!! Vanguard can be found here:

http://cf-vanguard.com/en/howto/

The rules of a normal cardfight apply, but with the addition of a special rule:

“During a trigger check, if a vanguard or rear-guard of the same clan as the trigger unit is not present on the field, the trigger effects will still activate.”

Therefore, please ignore the clans of the trigger units when choosing cards to build your deck

Lords of War - A change in the weather?

Over the last few weeks Will and myself have been looking at different ways of using the new weather expansion from Lords of War.

We have tried several different ideas with the aim of coming up with something for a campaign that we hope to run in the coming weeks. The one we like the best is what has become known as D6 weather!

How does D6 weather work?
At the beginning of the game the weather deck is shuffled and place next to the battle mat. The top card is then revealed and that is the weather at the start of the battle. The first two turns are played as normal and then at the beginning of the third turn and at every players turn following that the player has three choices which are:

1. Change the weather, the player discards the current weather card and draws the top 3 cards and chooses the one they wish to have in play and discards the other two! This is the end of there turn and they can do nothing else! Its costly but there are times in battle when it simply pays to wait for the right weather!

2. Roll to see if the weather changes. Roll a D6 on a result of a 5 the current weather card is discarded and the next one down in the deck is revealed. On the roll of a 6 the player discards the current weather and draws two cards from the top of the deck they may then choose which weather card will be in play and discards the other one. The players turn continues as normal with the new weather in effect!

3. Accept the weather as it is and play a turn as normal!

The games so far have been really interesting with weather conditions lasting for more turns than normal. It really changes the game and gives the players extra tactical decisions to make each turn. If you want to try out this fun variant then why not pop along to KD Games night tomorrow night! I am hoping to get a multi player game using this format of weather as from what Will has been saying it really is a great game!

Lords of War Qualifier

Lords of War Tournament
As part of this weekend Gambit Sunday we will be hosting a Lords of War Tournament!

The event will start at 5/6pm on Sunday 25th May 14 and is a free event to enter! Players will however need there own Lords of War deck! For this event players can use a deck that they have constructed themselves as long as they have kept to the correct format and only have cards from a single race/faction! I will be bringing some stock of both Elves vs Lizardmen and Orcs vs Dwarves with me and I will be happy to teach new players the game before the event begins.

If you have not played before its a really simple game to learn! It only takes a few minutes to learn the basics!

The amount of rounds played will depend on the number of players we get, but will be at least three! As it is a tournament we will be using the points system rather than just straight winning or losing! Players will get points for each unit or command unit they claim as well as additional points for winning a round. Rounds will be timed at 45 minutes per round with 5 additional player turns to finish the game!

The winner of this event will get an invite to the Lords of War Regional Tournament which will be taking place at Gambit Games CONQUEST event on September 27th! The free entry to this event will include free entry to the full day of gaming!

They will also receive a limited edition Lords of War Play Mat...

Event Deck

The Journey into Nyx Event Deck, named Wrath of the Mortals is released this Friday...

"Harness the power of fire and lightning to defeat your foes! The "Wrath of the Mortals" deck features a wide range of damage spells as well as creatures that reward you for casting them. As you blast away your opponent's forces, your creatures become more and more dangerous. Young Pyromancer andGuttersnipe trigger every time you cast an instant or sorcery, netting you additional creatures and damage. If possible, try to get these Shamans onto the battlefield before casting your other spells. Because your creatures yield more benefits the longer they stay on the battlefield, trading them with opposing creatures is usually not a good plan. Don't be afraid to take some early damage while you get set up.

Your suite of burn spells is both formidable and versatile. Many of these spells can target a creature or a player, so you'll be able to either remove problematic enemy forces or simply finish off your opponent. Flames of the Firebrand and Turn // Burn are great ways to clear out an early rush, andBattlefield Thaumaturge makes them brutally efficient if you're going after multiple creatures."

Campaigns and Leagues

I have been looking at adding some additional games to the Friday Night events at the Royal George! There is quite a bit of space in the function room and even when we get in excess of twenty players for MTG there will still be enough room for upto 2 4x4 tables!

What I am thinking of is some campaign or league events in the following systems ...

Blood Bowl
X-Wing
Judge Dredd
Lords of War

This would run along side the existing Magic evening, starting at 7pm and ending at 10pm. Cost would be £2 and I would schedule one system for a given week meaning that there would be one night each month for a given system!

The list above is only a suggestion, as with all things it would depend on the amount of players interested! Necromunda, Heroclix, or many others may be possible if we can get enough people! There has also been some talk of Role Play such as D&D or Dark Heresy!

Please let me know your thoughts and what you would be interested in and I will get something sorted for the coming weeks!

Theros Draft

On Tuesday 20th May I will be running a Theros Draft as part of KD Games Night! It will cost an extra £10 on top of the normal entry price of £2 making it £12!

It will be a Theros block draft so one Theros booster, one Born of the Gods and one Journey into Nyx!

It wil be starting at 7pm and consist of three 40 minute rounds with two boosters being given to the winner and one to second place at the end of the event! There will need to be at least 6 players for this event but ideally between 8 and 12! I will be creating the event for 20th later today along with next weeks to allow people to sign up early!

Young Guns

When we had the shop we used to run a club known as 'Young Guns' this was for young players under the age of 16 that were interested in learning and playing table top games such as Warhammer 40K.

I am very pleased to announce the arrival of ...

This will be on Friday afternoons from 4pm until 7pm at the Royal George on the Holmbush Roundabout in the function room! The cost will be just £2 per player and will have two 4x4 gaming tables or one 8x4 available depending on numbers! We will be able to help with army construction and rules queries as well as offer the opportunity to play both casually and later in tournaments and leagues! (If numbers are good then the amount of tables on offer will be reviewed).

This club will start form Friday May 16th 2014. If you are interested in attending please let me know and I will add you to the facebook group!

Fancy a game of Commander?

No not Magic the Gathering but Lords of War?
Its something that had not entered my mind until Martin (Black Box) mentioned it during a phone call on Friday! Even then I initially dismissed it, thinking that it would not make a great game, but then when I really started to think about it I reckon its worth a go!

So the idea is to play a game of Lords of War but with both players using all the command cards from all six decks! So that is the 6 commanders and 6 sets of 5 command cards from all the decks! That makes a normal 36 card deck, with the addition that none of the cards can be killed in one hit and there are no duplicate cards! The win conditions would be remove 20 cards in total or 4 generals! Players would select their starting general before the game starts!

Singleton decks make for a really interesting game as your draw is pretty much completely random, you will have no idea what you will get except it will be a good! In a game however where every card is good, it just might not be good enough! There will be a limited amount of calvary units and nothing that moves; and since no card can be removed without it being attacked by two of the opponents cards the game could potentially be very strategical and probably a little tense!!!

I will be giving the format a go tonight for anyone that is brave enough!

KD Magic Night!

We are changing our weekly events slightly. Instead of a 6pm start time which tended to become nearer 6:30pm or even 6:45pm we are making all future events start at 7pm! This does however mean that the round times will be reduced by 5 minutes and a punctual start will be required each week. Late arrivals will still be able to take part in the first round as long as they arrive and are ready to play within 5 minutes or can join in from subsequent rounds if they are later than that!

In addition to keep things simple we will try and announce all events for the coming month! I am aiming to run one Modern event each month with the rest being Standard. As far as Draft's are concerened I will move these to Tuesday Nights and try and give a couple of weeks notice!

Friday 2nd May ...... Standard 7pm £3
Friday 9th May ...... Standard 7pm £3
Friday 16th May ...... Modern 7pm £3
Friday 23rd May ...... Standard 7pm £3
Friday 30th May ...... Standard 7pm £3

Journey in to Nyx - Intro Decks

The Wilds and the Deep

"The Wilds and the Deep" features the monstrosity ability, which allows you to pay a lump sum of mana to permanently increase a creature's power and toughness. Just when your opponent thinks everything is under control, your monstrosity creatures can grow to unfathomable size. Power out your large monsters early, and make them unstoppable late.
Golden HindKiora's Follower, and Font of Fertility can come out in the first few turns and help you cast your large creatures more quickly. Creatures like Swarmborn Giant and Sealock Monster will likely be bigger than anything your opponent can muster when they hit the battlefield, and their monstrosity ability allows them to keep pace as the game goes on. Archetype of Imagination lets you get past ground stalls by taking flying away from all of your opponent's creatures and granting it to yours.
